Knowing the "why" behind bike safety is the key to understanding. This summer is a great time to make sure your learner understands the importance of bike safety during this 30-minute interactive bike safety course. As a cyclist since childhood, a cyclist involved in my own community, and the wife of an extreme cyclist, I am passionate about safety and have seen first-hand how basic helmet wearing, helmet fit, and rules of the road can affect an entire family for better or worse. This course will be fun, interactive, and light-hearted despite the seriousness of the topic. Loaded with positivity and enthusiasm, we will cover the following: Helmet Safety: Helmet fit and the science behind why we wear a helmet.*Please have your learner bring their helmet to class. Road safety: How to be safe on sidewalks, on a neighborhood street, and on a trail. Bike citizenship: How to be the best bike citizen you can be. Learning Goals
Learners will:
Understand the science behind why helmets are important.
Know the best options for safety and manners in a neighborhood, a trail, or wherever they typically ride their bike.
Be exposed to the ABCs of bike maintenance which in turn will help general bike safety.
Learn the basics of bike fit and why it can help their comfort and performance.

Hello! My name is Laura Smith and I am passionate about learning! I have over 20 years as a classroom teacher and have been tutoring middle and high school students for over 4 years. I offer a variety of classes to help with study skills, homework, social skills, and even a class on bike safety!
Professional Background:
I have over 20 years of teaching and tutoring experience ranging from elementary to high school. I earned my BSEd degree at the University of Missouri, Columbia. I taught with Columbia Public Schools and Liberty Public Schools since 1992. I currently am tutoring in my home in the evenings and during the day on Outschool.
I will provide a safe learning space where your student will be exposed to skills that will help them become a lifelong learner. I believe that all children learn at different speeds when their brain is ready and receptive to new information. Learning HOW to learn is fundamental to success. It is my goal that students leave a session with me feeling successful and confident!
Most of my classes are related to study skills and how to be the best student you can be. I also have a bike safety class and an ongoing choose your own book club!
Fun fact: My husband and I lived in England for a year in 2004. We enrolled our children in school there where I gained first-hand experience about schooling in another culture. We were able to travel throughout most of Europe while there which provided our family with valuable memories. I currently lead international group tours and travel around the United States in our campervan, Toaster.
