BIG Monster Mandarin x Singapore Math [Private] provides kids with a foundation in the Singapore math method in a Mandarin Chinese immersion environment. What is Singapore math? Understanding math instead of just memorizing it. The Singapore math method focuses on the following concepts: CPA (Concrete, Pictorial, Abstract) progression, number bonds, bar modeling, and mental math. "Singapore consistently ranks at the top in international math testing. The Singapore math method is a highly effective teaching approach originally developed by Singapore’s Ministry of Education in the 1980s for Singapore public schools. The method has been widely adopted in various forms around the world over the past twenty years following our introduction of the curriculum to the U.S. in 1998." -- https://www.singaporemath.com/ Since this is a custom, private class, topics will vary week over week, student to student based on the student's real life grade in school and level of math proficiency. Here are EXAMPLES of a potential program for a Level 1A/1B / Grade 1 student: Lesson 1: * Numbers 1-100 (CPA) * Addition (number bonds / bar modeling) * Subtraction (number bonds / bar modeling) Lesson 2: * Match, Sort, & Classify * Shapes & Solids Lesson 3: * Compare Height, Length, Weight, & Capacity * Time & Money The class starts with the fundamentals of numbers, counting and number identification followed by basic addition and subtraction utilizing number bonds and bar modeling to help visualize the concepts and gain a mastery at each stage. The Monster Mandarin teaching style is consistently fun with a focus on Mastery Learning, ensuring that each student understands the concepts being taught before proceeding to the next lesson. This class and all Monster Mandarin classes are high engagement and high interaction classes which students being encouraged to speak, listen and participate as much as possible. No previous experience with Math or Mandarin is required. Let's have fun and learn math in Mandarin!
Learning Goals
1. Developing a deep understanding of mathematical concepts: Singapore math focuses on building a strong foundation in fundamental mathematical concepts before moving on to more complex topics. Students are encouraged to understand why mathematical operations work the way they do, rather than just memorizing procedures.
2. Mastery of essential skills: The curriculum emphasizes the mastery of key mathematical skills and concepts, ensuring that students are proficient in areas such as number sense, arithmetic, and problem-solving.
3. Problem-solving skills: Singapore math places a strong emphasis on problem-solving. Students are taught different strategies to approach and solve mathematical problems, promoting critical thinking and logical reasoning.
4. Visual learning: The curriculum uses visual models and diagrams to help students better understand mathematical concepts. Bar models, in particular, are a key component of Singapore math, helping students visualize and solve complex problems.
5. Focus on real-world applications: Singapore math strives to show the practical applications of mathematics in everyday life, making math more relevant and engaging for students.
6. Gradual progression: The curriculum is designed with a step-by-step approach, gradually building upon previously learned concepts to ensure a smooth and logical progression in mathematical understanding.
7. Emphasis on communication: Singapore math encourages students to explain and communicate their thought processes and solutions, fostering both mathematical understanding and effective communication skills.
