Class Experience

With a few fundamental tips, this class will teach your student how to take appealing photos of their food using their smartphones. This class will specifically explore how to use light and composition with specific emphasis on angles and background. The class incorporates a lot of opportunity to analyze food photos and discuss them in class. Students will also have opportunities to take photos in class using the strategies introduced. This class uses a combination of discussion-oriented and application-focused exercises. The format is as follows:

Introduction of topic, examples with discussion, challenge questions, and application. The only requirement is that students have their smartphone and a food item. It can be fruit, vegetables, or anything they desire! The more colorful, the better! This is a great class for any student that likes to be creative, enjoys food, or has an interest in marketing.

Hello Outschool Families!

My name is Kim Abbas. There are a few things I believe can change life outcomes for all learners. One is the ability to remain curious! In my classroom, I promote questions that lead to deeper analysis of a topic. I enjoy using multi-media and discussion to help learners make connections and explore ideas in meaningful ways. The second skill I think is vital to a successful and rewarding life is the ability to communicate. To communicate well is to understand and be understood. There are many forms of communication and I look forward to exploring these strategies in my lessons!

Ok, now for the background stuff! I have a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism from the University of Houston. After graduation, I worked in broadcast journalism for five years, starting as a lowly desk assistant to eventually becoming a full-time reporter! I then went on to work as a marketing and communications advisor for the eight largest school district in the US! I transitioned into teaching and taught 5th grade Language Arts for the Conroe Independent School District. I have both professional and personal experience in digital marketing, public relations, photography, and journalistic writing. Currently, I teach ESL online and have a rewarding hobby re-selling fashion online. I’ve made a little over $12,000 in two years! Not bad for a fun side hustle! However, I can tell you my success stems from a knowledge of HOW to communicate to WHOM. I also understand how to use visuals to tell a story or sell a product! I cannot wait to help your child tap into this indispensable skill to be successful!

When I’m not teaching, I enjoy cooking, baking, swimming and exploring the outdoors with my husband. We also have a 9 year-old cat named Kyoji who loves to sleep on my pillow! I call him the pillow hijacker! One of my favorite quotes is by Author Roy T. Bennett who said, “Listen with curiosity. Speak with honesty. Act with integrity.”
