Class Experience

1. Students will learn to use strategies to read unfamiliar words.
     -- Students will learn about the strategy, how to use it and then practice using it.
     -- Students will be learn to decide which strategy could be used to read a word.

2. Students will learn about words with the vowel digraphs, trigraphs and common spelling patterns.
     -- Students will practice reading words with the target spelling pattern.
     -- Students will practice reading multisyllabic words that contain the target spelling pattern.
     -- Students will build words with the target spelling pattern.
3. Students will learn and practice reading high frequency words (sight words) that correlate with the stories that we read.

4. Students will practice reading sentences from a text that contains many words with the target spelling pattern.

5. Students will learn to identify how many syllables are in a word.
I have guided and coached many readers to become more fluent, accurate readers. Beginning readers need understand phonics patterns and to develop accuracy in their reading abilities before they are truly able to be fluent and deeply comprehend what they read. I have seen great success with the strategies that I teach because they are tangible and easy to understand.
In order to get the most out of this class, I ask that parents support their child with completing the assigned homework. I ask that parents have their child read aloud to them from the week's decodable book and practice the strategies learned in the lesson(s). Ideally, students should read aloud to their parents for 10-20 minutes per day from the decodable book or any book at their level.

I will provide some bonus materials that can be used for additional practice/homework. This may include songs, games or links to other resources that students can engage with outside of class time.
**A document containing all of the resources and special instructions will be posted for parents on the Friday before class begins.** I will provide the links to decodable books, worksheets and letter/word cards. I will indicate which resources should be printed out and which can be viewed digitally. I will provide either a link to the file to be downloaded or a direct link to a website.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Assessment will be informal, meaning that specific formalized "tests" will not be used. I will provide feedback and support after observing each student's performance while reading aloud words and sentences, choosing and using strategies and building words. If I feel additional interventions are necessary for a student's success in class, I will reach out to parents directly with suggestions.
2 hours per week in class, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
Parent support is crucial for children to succeed in this class. Parents will need to prepare materials and plan for time to work on homework with their child to maximize learning.
