Class Experience

US Grade 1 - 2
In this 8 lesson course, learners will work with early elementary level (1st and 2nd grade) geometry skills. Students will learn to define geometry vocabulary and apply them to shapes, use them in creating and talking about composite shapes, decomposing composite shapes, and to discuss shapes and vocabulary by comparing and contrasting. The study of geometry helps learners increase spatial understanding, build thinking skills, enhance 3-D thinking, and helps to connect the left and right hemispheres of the brain. This class will help lay the foundation for higher levels of geometrical learning and thinking. We will use a variety of methods throughout the course may include lectures, discussions, hands-on activities, slides, total physical response (using our body to physically respond), songs/chants, and worksheets.

Lesson 1
Open and closed shapes
Sides
2-dimensional shapes (*we will mention some names but focus for this course will be on attributes)

Lesson 2
3-dimensional shapes (*we will mention some names but focus for this course will be on attributes)
Vertex
Face

Lesson 3
Attributes of shapes
Composite shapes (2D and 3D)

Lesson 4
Comparing and contrasting shapes by attributes

Lesson 5
Two and four equal shares

Lesson 7
Partitioning rectangles into equal squares
Area (counting the equal squares to find total squares in a rectangle)

Lesson 8
Review of concepts learned throughout the course

I am a licensed K-8 teacher with 17+ years of experience teaching ages 2-16 in a variety of capacities. My classroom experience has mainly been in Kindergarten and Preschool but I have also taught two-year-old preschool, first grade, second grade, and fourth grade. My most important role is as a homeschool mom to three wonderfully curious children. We are a neurodiverse family and I believe in creating opportunities for all children to learn and grow. My teaching experiences include a variety of settings: Montessori, public schools, private schools, and international schools both in-person and virtual. I have been teaching English as a Second Language online for the last 5 years. I have taught in the US states of Colorado, Wisconsin, and New Mexico as well as the countries of Kuwait and Fiji. I love teaching young children using hands-on and multisensory approaches, including games and songs where I can. Learning should be fun and I always do my best to help children enjoy their journey.

I hold a Master of Education degree from Regis University in Colorado. My Bachelor of Music degree comes from the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh with an emphasis in Flute Performance. While in Kuwait I studied through the Educational Collaborative for International Schools and Cambridge University to obtain my International Teacher Certificate. I believe education is a lifelong journey and am always working to further my knowledge and skills through self-study, workshops, and courses.

I am passionate about traveling and learning about different cultures. I live with my husband and three children in the USA. Together we enjoy hiking, traveling, swimming, playing games, and learning together.
