Class experience
Dr. King is well known for his "I Have a Dream" speech, but clearly, there was much more to him than the one speech. In this class, we will try to get to know the individual who spearheaded the Black Civil Rights Movement by analyzing a number of his speeches and writings. Each week students will be responsible for doing a first...
This class will be taught by Cynthia, an educator from the Social Studies Center who has taken classes in African American Studies. She is also trained for the class under Laura who has taken numerous training from various organizations like the Center for Civic Education, Liberty Funds, National Endowment for the Humanities, and others. She has trained at the Civil Rights Museum in Birmingham, AL and spent a week studying Dr. King in Washington, DC under various scholars.
1 file available upon enrollmentThis book is not required, but has all of the speeches and some background to them, which might be helpful: "I Have A Dream: Writings and Speeches that Changed the World" Edited by James M. ****Please keep in mind that Dr. King was a religious leader of the Christian faith so his speeches and writings often have a religious tone and reference Biblical stories. We will not use these to promote his religion, but to help us understand him and his perspectives.
