Beyond Acceptance: Preparing to Succeed in College (Ongoing)
Class experience
US Grade 11 - 12
COURSE DESCRIPTION: College Applications & Planning = In Process. Decision Letters = Coming Soon!... Now What? In this ongoing version of my multi-day class Beyond Acceptance: Preparing to Succeed in College, students can join at any week, according to when they are ready to begin preparing for college - topics do not build, but are distinct This discussion/informative style course (with some videos and a guest speaker during some sessions) is packed full of information that will empower...
Students who attend all six different topic classes will learn: - navigate the structure of college classes - understand the 'contract' and four year plan of completing one's major - communicate professionally/appropriately with professors/advisors - know how and when to ask for help - understand the basics of student loans - take on the responsibilities of being a successful student on their own (including note-taking/study skills/basic financial knowledge) - take advantage of various experiences to make them as competitive as possible (i.e. internships, study abroad, extra curriculars, job preparation) - how to create a five-year and ten-year plan
I own my own college consulting business and I have mentored high school students since 2014 and continue to do so today through two non-profit organizations both virtually and in-person. Professionally, I've guided high school students through educational transitions from one school to another, from one country to another, and from high school into college. I have also worked with students who were struggling academically and needed the additional encouragement and accountability of a mentor. I worked as an advisor at a public institution for over 5 years. In addition, I have mentored/coached students through the college admissions process as well as through college. I hold an Independent Education Consultant certificate, an M.A in Teaching English as a Second Language, and a Bachelor's degree in Sociology with minors in English and Spanish.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
This course is designed for those students attending college in the USA. If a student is attending college in a different country, the class may still be relevant! As a former study abroad advisor, I do have knowledge of some countries' systems. Please message me to let me know where the student is attending and I can provide feedback if the course is right for them. (As part of our discussion on credit cards, students are advised that they should speak with their parent(s) before applying for a credit card.)
MY SCHEDULE: My 'weekend' is usually Monday - Tuesday, but can vary based on my college visit/travel schedule. I typically am available only afternoons and evenings as well. Therefore I may not respond to messages received beginning Sunday evening...
