Better Basic Dog Training for Children (Ages 7-12)

In this 5-week course, your child will learn positive reinforcements to teach basic obedience commands to your dog such as sit, stay, down, come, and wait.

What's included

Homework
1-2 hours per week. Homework assigned will be practicing the commands learned in the training. It will consist of a session of 15-20 minutes practice per day. Students will need to master commands at a rate of 5 out of 5.
Assessment
The student must achieve 5 out of 5 commands done correctly with their dog. On the final session, the student and dog must complete specific skills for graduation.

Class Experience

This class will consist of basic obedience for dogs and puppies.  I will be modeling for the students how to train their own dogs. I will use positive reinforcement, clicker training and treats in my demonstrations using my own dog. Each week I will demonstrate two or three commands in each lesson and the students will be practicing the techniques using their own dogs.  In addition, we will practice the commands learned in the previous week in the following lesson.  

Week 1: Tools for dog training, communication, housebreaking, use a clicker, "Name Game/Watch Me" and "sit from a stand" commands using clicker, non-verbal and verbal cues.
Week 2: Review week 1 commands "Watch me” and "Sit" adding duration, "take it/leave it" and "down" commands using non-verbal and verbal cues, and loose leash walking. 
Week 3:  Review week 2 commands "down" and "take/it leave it."  "Sit-stay with distractions" command using non-verbal and verbal cues, sit for greeting and loose leash walking. 
Week 4:  Review "sit-stay" command (Walking through a doorway). Down/stay.  Come when called (recall), loose leash walking with sit. Review for graduation.
Week 5:  Review (recall). "Sit-stay and down-stay with distractions,” "down-stay” command, and loose leash walking.  Graduation. Tricks.
Learning Goals
Students will learn how to train their dogs in the commands of watch me, sit/down, take it/leave it, wait, drop/give, stay/come, loose leash walking, and down/down stay.

Other Details

Parental Guidance
It is recommended puppies be at least 4 months old. Dogs and puppies are unpredictable and train differently. Space is needed to train.
Supply List
Dog, treats, collar, leash, 15-20 foot long lead, and clicker. Dog collars ($5-$10), leashes ($10-$20), long leashes ($10-$20) and clickers ($2-5) may be purchases online or at a pet store. The collar and leash the dog currently has may be appropriate, but for pulling, another collar or leash may be suggested but not mandatory. A rope or two leashes tied together may be used in place of a long lead.

Space is needed to train dogs. Also, dogs are unpredictable and may not always be ready to learn. Teacher is an AKC Canine Good Citizen (CGC) Evaluator and  tester observer with Alliance of Therapy Dogs and has trained and certified five therapy dogs of her own.
