Class Experience

US Grade 3 - 6
In this class students will be able to practice their reading skills, reflect on chosen literature and practice teamwork with new friends. They will also be able to practice their confidence in speaking, while we discuss our book selection every other week.

This class will take place on Fridays for 45 minutes. Students will have time to talk and catch up with their besties at the beginning of class. Next, we will pinpoint new, tricky words from the text in order to define and make meaningful connections with what we are reading. We will also learn about using skills like annotation and POV to encourage a better understanding of our book, its characters and the author's purpose.

At the end of class students will be able to complete a literature focused activity (created by a member of the club) and have a snack with their friends while planning the next class meeting/discussion.

Book club with your bestie = learning and FUN!

SUGGESTED MONTHLY BOOK THEMES:
These themes will help guide our book choices for each month. They were chosen to correlate with monthly holidays or events in history. Chosen books will be from many genres and students will have the opportunity to vote on each month's book.
(nonfiction, fiction, biographies, memoirs, folktales, historical fiction and so much more)

March: Irish Literature and The Iditarod
April: Shakespeare and Comedy (April Fool's Day)
May: Mexico (Cinco de Mayo) and The Kentucky Derby
June: Oceans and Nature
July: Julius Caesar and Patriotic
August: Pompeii and Summer
September: Pirates: Blackbeard
October: Spooky and Haunted
November: Fall and Family
December: Holidays and Winter

Students in this class will take on leadership roles. This will allow ownership of the book club and its purpose is to be student focused! I will be there to encourage and guide throughout each meeting to ensure learning and structure.

NOTE: books will be age appropriate and shared with parents prior to each month to ensure safety and approval for each family.
