Class Experience

The majority of this class will be in a lecture format. The first five minutes of class, we'll talk as a group about our experiences, either from a customer's standpoint or as an employee. What did you like or dislike, as a customer, about the business? If you've worked before, what did you like or dislike about your job?

In the next 25 minutes of class, we'll go over some things you can do to make yourself a quality employee in the workplace. This will include things like volunteering, being proactive with your boss, having a good attitude, leaving a job on good terms, thinking about ways you can make yourself, and the company you work for, more productive; being a problem solver, making yourself valuable, offering solutions, understanding that you can be replaced, having humility, praising others, developing a plan for your career growth, continuing your education/learning, being adaptable on the job (the only constant is change), and earning that promotion.

Students will be able to ask questions and offer comments during the lecture. They can draw from their own experiences as customers, and possibly, as employees. The main focus will be on qualities that employers often like to see in an employee. I will be drawing from my own experience of 25 years as an employer at one of the largest insurance companies in the country, as well as in real estate.

Learning Goals

Students will learn about the basic concepts of what many employers want. This can help them find and keep a job, and possibly help them move up in a company. We will expand on 15 basics that employers may like to see on the job. This will deal with goal setting, positive attitude, a dynamic approach to your job, and earning a promotion versus expecting one. There are a lot of things an employee can do that can have a positive impact on his or her job. This can be reflected in added job security, better resume enhancement, and may also affect his or her chances of promotion.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I was an employer for 25 years. I have hired workers in the insurance industry as well as property management and other endevours. I know what made a big difference to me and the companies I hired for in dealing with employees' on the job performance and attitude. In addition, I feel I can really help a student get more out of their job by teaching them the ideas and techniques that we will discuss in class. For example, staying positive on the job and praising coworkers when appropriate. Being one of those employees who volunteers to help the boss out when there is an excess work load can really help an employee get more out of their job. They may have a higher chance at promotions and also be able to use that job to enhance their resume and possiblly add to their carreer advancement potential. It takes very little extra work to work smart and avoid problems ahead of time, and it can make you, the employee, look like a star on the job!
