1 live meeting
35 mins in-class hours per week
Homework
1 hour per week. Students will receive a practice activity after each class. It is a self-paced worksheet that reinforces the material covered in the course. I recommend working on the worksheet with a family member, as it will create an opportunity to recap topics covered during the lessons. It will also provide the students with an extra chance to practice communication skills and social-emotional learning. Keep an eye out on the classroom page after each class for the material posted.

CLASS SUMMARY:

This class introduces children to social functioning, and communication tools to help them make friends, start a conversation, join conversations, and get along with people. As an ongoing class, students can join any week and there is no need to catch up on the previous lesson. To facilitate learning and student interaction, we use short stories about people in various real-life scenarios. We brainstorm solutions to the stories; and share/discuss possible dialogue among characters. Some examples of social stories used in class are: making new friends, helping friends get along, standing up for yourself or a friend, resolving misunderstandings, starting a conversation, and speaking to a group, among others. Student participation and engagement are highly encouraged.

Each class will include:
(1) a discussion part where students will learn content and strategies regarding the day's topic and will brainstorm solutions to different social scenarios.
(2) a practice part where students will have the opportunity to share ideas, practice problem-solving, and conversation exchanges using prompts.

Each week we will cover a different topic and there are ten different classes for this course.

 EXAMPLES OF TOPICS COVERED:

>>>Being a Good Friend: students will learn tools and practice what to do or say when working in a group, sharing, working things out and the power of being gracious.

>>>Social Success: students will be introduced to various conversation strategies, such as staying on topic and changing topics, managing conversation challenges, and the power of being a good listener.

>>>Working in Teams: The class covers the importance of being flexible and accepting changes when working in a group. This lesson also covers tools that can be used to help resolve conflicts with friends and the importance of good sportsmanship.

>>>Expressing Yourself Positively: This lesson covers tools used to express confidence and how to control and modulate our voice and our body language when communicating our ideas and thoughts.

>>>Self-Regulation and Handling Misunderstandings: This lesson covers tools that can be used to help us resolve conflicts or misunderstandings with friends.

>>>Handling Social Challenges: this class covers how to manage the challenges in friendships. We will cover strategies on “How to Be Brave to Stop Teasing” and how to stand up for others.

>>>Being a Friend Leader and Role Model: This class will cover the importance of including others in activities, and how to help other friends join in on groups. We will also discuss “Mixing and Matching” our friendships and being part of different groups.

>>>Positive Thinking and Building Stronger Friendships: We will talk about the importance of positive thinking and identify ways to build stronger friendships.

>>>Making Friends: Students will learn tools that can help them “Speak Up” for a fun reason, to help make new friends, meet new people and join in on conversations.

>>>Expressing Ourselves Assertively: We will define assertiveness and discuss how body language can influence how our “message” is “heard” by the listener.
