In this introductory course, join professional actress and theatre maven, Miss Cassidy, as we learn about Shakespeare's early life in Stratford Upon Avon, his time in London as an actor, and his eventual ascension to being considered by many to be the greatest writer to have ever lived. Through studying his sonnets, playing with his prose, and vetting his verses we will come to understand the basics of Shakespearean English and how to understand and enjoy it. The first half of class will be lecture and discussion-based supplemented by slides. And in the second half, we will play games with the Bard's greatest speeches and learn to hurl Elizabethan insults. This class is inclusive, which means Learners of all abilities and backgrounds are welcome. Together we work to build an inclusive environment that encourages, supports, and celebrates our diverse voices. We share and respect pronouns, we support each other's Learning differences, and we create a safe space for all Learners. If you need any accommodations please let me know and we will work together to ensure that they have the best possible class experience.
Learning Goals
Learners will come away with the a basic knowledge of Shakespeare's life and legacy. Learners will be equipped with the tools to begin enjoying and understanding classic texts.

Parental Guidance
The texts used in this class are from Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet, and Macbeth. These specific texts reference death and the supernatural. Shakespeare's texts cover a wide range of subjects including suicide, murder, sexual situations, and intolerance. Any of these topics should they come up will be discussed within the context of the material.

Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Teacher expertise and credentials
Miss Cassidy is a professional actress and a lifelong Shakespeare student. She worked as production manager for a major regional classical theatre and was fortunate to work on many classical plays in many different roles including performer (A Weird Sister in Macbeth), dramaturg, choreographer, and assistant director. For her performance as a Weird Sister, she was named "Best Actress of the Year" along with her fellow witches. Miss Cassidy has a degree in Theatre from Point Park University's Conservatory of Performing Arts.
