Class Experience

No prior knowledge is required. Students are welcome to bring their curiosity about space exploration!

Students will be learning about necessary systems for satellites and other spacecraft. I will be showing them a step-by-step drawing to create their spacecraft outline. After that, we will look at some of the systems in more detail; and student can add these into their designs.

My teaching style includes both hands-on as well as visual techniques. I believe that students learn best when they can see and understand how subjects relate together along with theoretical knowledge. For example, we will discuss the electrical power system. As we learn to draw the solar arrays and batteries, I will be showing the students an example of a solar cell while also providing pictures of actual spacecraft with these.

Students will be given the opportunity to interact frequently. Students will discuss frequent uses for satellites such as communications and weather imaging. At the end of class, students are welcome to show their final drawing to one another if they wish. Sharing is not required if the student wishes to keep their work private. The important thing is that the students are having fun and learning in a creative and safe setting!

Learning Goals

Students will be able to describe various uses and applications for spacecraft and space exploration such as cell phones and weather imaging.

Students will be able to describe the basic systems required for spaceflight and what each system can do.

Students will be able to create a basic satellite while including several spacecraft systems in their designs.

Profile
Teacher expertise and credentials
As a former NASA Engineer of approximately 18 years, I'm extremely passionate about inspiring students to learn about space. While working at NASA, I was fortunate to work as a space instructor teaching both the astronauts and mission controllers how to operate the International Space Station systems and Transport Vehicles. I received my certification through NASA’s Instructor Training Course (ITC) which prepared me for developing the lesson plans, creating presentation materials, and providing evaluations in both classroom settings as well in the space simulators.
My love for teaching began when I was 16 in my very first job teaching swimming lessons. And I have been teaching in one capacity or another for the last 28 years. In addition to teaching with NASA, I have taught Chemistry & Physical Science, tutored Math, and worked with several science fair students. For my most recent teaching experience, I have been teaching online for the past 3 years. This has been wonderful as it allows me to help and inspire students around the world.

I believe in using a variety of strategies to help students learn. By integrating auditory, visual, and hands-on experience, students are engaged in learning on many different levels. I believe students can learn best when they understand the correlation to real-life examples.

I look forward to seeing your students in the classroom soon. And I hope to inspire them to reach for the stars!
