A continuation of Levels 1-3, young singers will receive musical training consisting of vocal technique warmups, rhythm training, ear training. This class will also explore acting skills and storytelling through songs from the classical musical theatre repertoire. Students will receive a 40+ page downloadable workbook for this class. SONGS Summer & Fall, 2021 Songs When you wish upon a star (Pinocchio) Do-Re-Mi (The Sound of Music) Dites-Moi / Tell Me Why (South Pacific) *Selections subject to change PRE-REQUISITES Beginning Singing III OR familiarity with basic musicianship and ability to match pitch. Students do not need to be able to read music. CLASS EXPERIENCE Young singers will have the opportunity multiple times in each class to demonstrate what they've learned for the teacher and other classmates and practice along while others are demonstrating. *Singers will be asked to remain muted during instructional and practice time. However, singers will be invited to sing for everyone in the class multiple times throughout class and will receive feedback during this time. INCLUSIONS -physical movement -vocal exploration exercises -vocal technique in head and chest voice -ear training and pitch matching -Solfège -rhythm reading and writing -acting, storytelling and performance -practice of songs selected for children between the ages of 5-9 SUPPLIES A 40+ page downloadable packet will available the morning of the first class which will include sheet music, rhythm practice, character worksheets and coloring sheets and a certificate. Students may wish to use a 3 ring binder to hold the packet. THINGS WE'LL EXPLORE BEYOND LEVEL III -Expanded vocal technique and more complex singing patterns -Note reading -Complex sing-back patterns -writing notes on the staff -Reading of complex rhythms and meter (whole notes, half notes, quarter notes, triplets and eighth notes) -Memorization of longer songs -Language and diction -Artistry and Expression -Storytelling -Singers will expand upon their previously learned Solfège skills PARTICIPATION *Participation is encouraged throughout class. Singers who wish to remain muted throughout class may do so. *Sheet music purchased on each child's behalf for this course is copyrighted and not reproducible. Learning Goals
Technique: head and chest voice, stretches and posture, belly breathing, long supported notes, longer patterns
Ear Training: Matching pitch, identifying and performing high/low and up/down tones
Rhythm: Being able to maintain a steady beat, chanting words and making percussion sounds, Singing in 4/4 and 3/4 meter. Quarter, whole, half, eight and triplet notes (reading and counting) .
Performance and Acting: story telling, diction and articulation, melody, actions
*Each learner will have multiple opportunities to sing for by themselves for others during each class time. They will also receive feedback during this time.

Sarah LOVES working with young musicians. For 8 years, she was a resident teaching artist for the Lyric Opera of Chicago and taught young performers how to produce, write, and sing in their very own opera!
Sarah has been teaching private and group voice lessons for 20 years and is a Royal Conservatory of Music Elementary Certified Voice Instructor.
