Beginner Level
During this 20 minute class, learners will practice rhyming, using visuals, recognizing, sight words, and sounding out words to develop early reading skills. Learners will become familiar with parts of a book (cover, title page, etc). Learners will warm up with matching games and activities to practice words they will see in the text, and then we will read each book of the week twice for repeated practice. Learners do not need to bring the book or any other materials to class. Learners who have not yet learned to read may join this class. This class alone will not teach learners how to read, but it will reinforce important reading skills emerging readers need to become strong independent readers. Hi, I specialize in teaching reading. It is my passion to introduce students to books and develop a love for reading in kids of all ages. I have a masters degree in education from Columbia University's Teachers College and a special education certificate in special education from Brooklyn College in New York City. I have worked as a peer tutor, as a test prep tutor, and as an Orton-Gillingham tutor, helping students overcome various reading difficulties to achieve their goals. I also worked as a reading teacher and a special education teacher at a title 1 charter school in NYC. I believe that every child has the potential to become an avid reader, we just have to ignite their passion and build their skills in an individualized way. I recently moved from NYC to live near the ocean. My hobbies include going to the beach, traveling, playing tennis, and or course READING!
