This class will be structured as a small group reading lesson. Students do not need to be able to read for this class. The main focus for this class is understanding the story and its purpose. The structure of this class is as follows: 5 minutes- This will be spent building background knowledge and discussing what learners already know about all types of sharks. If you have a "shark" to share, I would love to see it :)! 10-15 minutes- I will read the story "Could a Shark Do...
The goal for this class is to help students improve their comprehension and re-telling of stories. This class is also designed to help learners organize their thoughts when remembering parts of a story. Students will also learn about the life of a great white shark and many facts about some other types of sharks. Key vocabulary relating to sharks (gills, fins, senses, fish, ocean) will be emphasized throughout the lesson.
I was a 1st grade teacher for many years and am passionate about teaching in a way that integrates many subjects at once (reading, writing and science all in one lesson). I love teaching about all science related topics! The knowledge and skills that I have acquired throughout my teaching career also allow me to help young learners sharpen their reading skills.
No homework is necessary however, follow up activities will be shared at the end of class that learners are encouraged to do to help reinforce their understanding of great white sharks.
Printed out graphic organizer, pencil, crayons and/or markers (will be posted in the classroom before class begins). The book I will be reading is called "Could A Shark Do Gymnastics?" by: Camilla de la Bedoyere. It is not necessary for you to purchase this book for this class. You are welcome to purchase it or view it before the class if you wish. It is currently available on Amazon.com and abebooks.com for roughly $12.00.
40 minutes per week in class, and no time outside of class.
