Using the Schaum Lesson Books, we will learn to play the piano together!

Class Experience

Student will learn the very basics of classical piano including hand position, note reading, and simple music theory in a kid friendly manner. Each 40 minute class will be divided into four shorter segments, making the piano lesson more approachable for young children. These segments are: Fingerpower (fun finger exercises performed on the piano intended to make young fingers more dexterous), Notespeller (a work-book that teaches kids to read music fluently), Theory (a work-book that teaches...

Students will be able to hold their hands in the proper position.
Students will be able to identify the most common notes in standard music notation.
Students will be able to practice finger dexterity through specific written exercises.
Students will be able to perform simple melodies by reading music.

I was a piano major for my undergraduate degree. I have performed in solo concert, accompanied choirs and instrumentalists, and have mastered the music of classical and composers such as Beethoven, Mozart and Chopin. I am experienced with teaching piano to young children and love seeing kids filled with pride for being able to do something that not everyone can do. I wrote my own piano pedagogical method for my Honors Capstone Project which was geared for students of piano ages 4-6. John Schaum's methodology is what I'll be using for this course.

Learning to play the piano is the greatest joy of my life! I want to share it with others so they can experience that same joy and satisfaction.

In order to improve on the piano, students should practice 15 minutes a day, 6 days a week consistently. They will also have assignments in their Notespeller (0-2 page weekly) and Theory Workbook (1-2 page weekly)

Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.

Students will be given the opportunity to play the assigned songs for me as well as their classmates. They will be proud of their hard work if they practice as assigned! They will get immediate feedback from me.

40 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
