In this beginning course, students will meet for half an hour once a week for eight weeks. We will cover the basics of the piano keyboard, rhythm, and note reading and playing. Although we will be learning about notation, I will also be incorporating rote learning (playing by ear). This is generally done using the Playback Method. I play something, the students play it back. Participation is key! I will have each students play the prepared assignment for the class. I will then make some...
This class is taught in English.
Weekly practice assignments. I recommend at minimum three practice sessions about 15-20 minutes each. I will submit a practice sheet each week that can be used as a guide to daily practice for kids and parents.
Alfred's Basic Piano Library: Lesson Book, Level 1A. See link below: https://www.sheetmusicplus.com/title/alfred-s-basic-piano-course-lesson-book-level-1a-sheet-music/3660630 Keyboard or Piano: A piano or a keyboard is necessary with a music stand for their book. Parents frequently ask if keyboards are ok. The answer is YES! There is no need to have 88 weighted keys, although it is nice to have. The minimum requirement is 61 plastic keys. I do not recommend roll-up 2-D pianos or small baby toy pianos. Here are some Amazon links to keyboards I like: 88 weighted keys like this one: https://www.amazon.com/Yamaha-Weighted-Digital-Sustain-Amazon-Exclusive/dp/B01LY8OUQW/ref=sr_1_3?crid=Q3MM89KH8KUB&dchild=1&keywords=yamaha+keyboard&qid=1596849121&sprefix=Yamaha%2Caps%2C212&sr=8-3 or 61 plastic keys, which is less expensive but better if you are just trying it out: https://www.amazon.com/Yamaha-PSR-E273-Portable-Keyboard-PSRE273/dp/B0854C7M9R/ref=sr_1_6?crid=Q3MM89KH8KUB&dchild=1&keywords=yamaha+keyboard&qid=1596849270&sprefix=Yamaha%2Caps%2C212&sr=8-6 I've heard great things about this Casiotone CT-S200, a bare-bones 61 key $120 keyboard. https://www.amazon.com/Casio-Casiotone-Portable-Keyboard-CT-S200RD/dp/B07VSTXH3V/ref=sr_1_1?crid=2XAH6TZRP8P6Q&dchild=1&keywords=casio+ct-s200&qid=1600348994&sprefix=Casio+CT-S200%2Caps%2C219&sr=8-1 I also like "Casio Privia" full-sized keyboards. Thanks again!
Informal assessment. The main requirement is that some progress is made from week to week and everyone enjoys the experience.
30 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
We will be using the Alfred Basic Piano Library Series, Lesson Book 1A. I encourage each student to have a copy (see attached link). If this is not possible, I will be posting PDFs of the material to be used for a given class before each meeting. I will also post supplementary material from time to time which I will make available to download. I also have a YouTube Channel where I play through and discuss all of the assigned pieces. I provide a link to the pertinent video(s) each week and encourage students to use them.
