Class Experience
In this basic, beginning phonics FLEX class, students will learn a series of letters and then practice putting those letter together to build simple CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) words. This class is intended for students who are just learning their letters and/or students who know a few letters, but need extra practice putting letters and sounds together. They will learn what each letter looks like, how to write each letter and what sound each letter makes. I follow a logical sequence and structured lesson plan. This will allow students to gradually expand their knowledge of letters and sounds and how they work together. I will post a 30-45 minute video lesson on Tuesdays and Thursdays. I will introduce a letter name and the sound that it makes. We will then work through writing the letter, and practice making the letter sound. Each lesson will build on the previous lesson and previous letters will be reviewed. You are welcome to work through the content at your own pace, but learner resposnes with receive more consistent feedback and interaction if they are posted by the following Tuesday. This is not just a pencil, paper, worksheet class. We will use multi-sensory phonics practice along with some traditional paper, pencil practice. I will show examples through letter cards, letter tiles and onscreen slides. A summary of each lesson will be provided for review and practice. I expect learners to upload their work to the classroom to share with me and the other students. This can be done through a video, or by posting a picture. I will provide feedback through video response and posting comments in the classroom. Each week there will be two learner to learner challenges that will need to be turned into the classroom under the activity post: 1) Create a sentence to share with other learners using words that start with the focus letters (i.e. Cal and Oscar can catch Carl with an odd car.) How many words can you think of that start with the focus letter? 2) Find something that starts with the focus letter and share with other learners by posting a picture or video. If you don't have something at home, can you draw something or find a picture of something to share? PLEASE don't go buy anything! 3) Using your Sound Mapping page, how many more words (real or nonsense) can you make with the letters we have learned? Lesson sequence is as follows: Lesson 1: letter c Lesson 2: letters o and a Lesson 3: letter d and review Lesson 4: letters g and m Lesson 5: letters l and h Lesson 6: t and Review Lesson 7: Review Words Lesson 8: CVC Phrases and Sentences

Supply List
I will provide a template for handwriting paper and a sound mapping page. Learners may use their own primary lined paper. If you do not have access to a printer, you may create your own sound mapping page by hand (based on template provided). Learner will need a marker or pen to write with and 3 small objects (coins, building bricks, counters, cubes, paperclips). Optional: Students are welcome to practice letters on a dry erase board during the lesson if they wish.
