Class Experience

**Students must know the majority of the letter sounds to be successful in this course! If your child does not know their letter sounds I highly recommend they take Beginning Phonics FLEX 1: Letter Sounds before this class. Students DO NOT need to know how to write their letters to take this class**

A FLEX class does not rely on live meetings but instead has videos and other posts in the Outschool classroom. This is ideal for learning these beginning phonics skills because your child can practice over and over again. In addition, every child learns these skills at their own pace and this class allows them to view materials again if they need additional practice and instruction.  Students can move through the weekly videos at their own pace and spend time working at their own level instead of having to wait for or rush to stay with other students. 

Each week will include Three Parts: Phonological Awareness, Phonics Instruction and Handwriting

Phonological Awareness: interactive video weekly
Phonics Instruction: three to five interactive videos weekly, two age appropriate worksheets (one coloring based, one focused on cutting and glueing)
Handwriting: Video introducing how to write weekly letters, weekly practice sheets

Additional Materials

Parent Outline: I will provide an outline of how parents can support their students and use the materials in the most effective way
Extension Activities: Activities moving beyond the classroom and encouraging students to apply their new skills in the real world
Printable Letters: to utilize as manipulatives along with some of my videos to create words or sounds without needing to write. You are welcome to use magnets, blocks, etc as manipulatives if you prefer

Week One: Beginning Sounds, Learn Alliteration, Writing uppercase letters- E, F, H, L, I, T, J
Week Two: Beginning Sounds, Learn Blending Onset and Rime, Review Alliteration, Writing uppercase letters- C, G, O, Q, S
Week Three: Ending Sounds, Learn Segmenting Onset and Rime, Review Blending Onset and Rime, Writing uppercase letters- B, P, R, D, K, M, N, U
Week Four: Ending Sounds, Learn Blending Sounds into Words, Review Alliteration, Writing uppercase letters- V, W, X, Y, A, Z
Week Five: "a" words, Learn Segmenting Sounds in Words, Review Blending Sounds into words, Writing lowercase letters- s, u, w, x, z, p
Week Six: "e" and "i" words, Review Segmenting and Blending Sounds in words, Writing lowercase letters- b, h, k, l, t, f
Week Seven: "o" and "u" words, Learn Phoneme Deletion, Review Segmenting and Blending Sounds in words- c, a, o, q, d, g
Week Eight: Mixed vowel words, Learn Phoneme Substitution, Review Phonemic Awareness, Writing lowercase letters- m, n, r, i, j, e, y

Learning Goals

Students will work on phonological awareness skills.

Students will be able to identify beginning letter sounds.

Students will be able to identify ending letter sounds.

Students will start to blend sounds together to read cvc words. 

Students will start to segment sounds to create cvc words.

Supply List
Students will need a manipulative of each letter such as magnets, blocks or print off the sheet provided and cut apart letters

Students will need access to a printer for weekly worksheets that will use scissors, coloring utensils, pencils, and glue.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
