Class Experience

Nature and landscape photography is a rewarding and enriching activity that produces art and also soothes the soul. In this course we will go over core concepts of landscape and nature photography. This includes idea generation and compositional elements. After that, students should be excited to get outside and photograph the land and nature they see around them.

I've been a teacher for 18 years teaching photography and journalism and I'm a believer in the idea that students learn by DOING. Therefore, after this initial lecture, I'll make sure to comment on each student's photographs as they submit them during the next week.

Learning Goals

Students will learn what makes Nature and Landscape Photography important, how to generate ideas for what to take photos of, and the main compositional elements they need to remember to make great pictures.

The compositional elements we will review:
- Getting Close
- Perspective
- Framing
- Worm's Eye View
- Bird's Eye View
- Leading Lines
- Repetition
- Texture

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello! I'm "Z" - the name my students have called me since I was a first-year teacher 18 years ago in a public high school in Omaha, Nebraska.

I specialize in teaching photography, magazine design, video production, journalism writing and more. I've taught thousands of journalism and audio/visual students with young people who inspire me with hope for the future. My students have won multiple state championships in journalism and the program I advise is one of the nation's strongest.

I have also been a professional photographer and designer through the years, building a photography business with my wife and working with another artist to create custom graphics and designs.

I have always believed in the power of young people and their ability to do amazing things. I truly think the best teachers in life are the ones who, yes, know their subject, but who also motivate and encourage students to be the best version of themselves. I do this in my classroom by promoting student voice over my own and by making sure students learn by DOING, not by watching or being so bored they fall over asleep. I have a degree in Language Arts education from the University of Nebraska at Omaha and have a current teaching certificate in the state of Nebraska.

I am a husband to an amazing artist and writer, and a father to a sensitive and incredibly loving young 10-year-old boy. My favorite hobby is (surprise!) photography, but I also like painting miniatures and playing board games with friends.
