Beginning Guitar - Level A

In this beginning course, students will explore the basics of guitar, learn notes on the upper strings, play simple guitar riffs and strum simplified chords! Upon completion of Level A, students will be eligible for the Level B course.

Class Experience

In this 8-meeting course, students will explore the basics of guitar, learn notes on the upper strings, play simple riffs and strum simplified chords! Students will learn how to read music, tablature and chord diagrams. The teacher will demonstrate a concept or technique and then students will practice together as a group and individually. There are no wrong notes here - only opportunities for learning. 

Week One: Tuning, getting a good tone, parts of the guitar, learning notes on E string (E, F & G), playing notes on the E string, learning simplified version of the G and Em chord, strum along to Eleanor Rigby. We will also discover some simple warm-up exercises. 

Week Two: Review of Week 1 materials, learn notes on the B string (B, C & D), learn simplified C chord, 

Week Three: Review Week 2 materials, learn A, D & G chords, learn a new song. 

Week Four: Review materials from weeks 1-3. Learn notes on the G string (G & A), learn guitar riffs, new short riffs and a new song.

Week Five: Review notes on E, B & G strings. We will add more technical exercises and will continue to expand chord voicings. 

Week Six: Review E, B, & G strings. Begin learning notes on the D (4th) string. Learn new riffs. 

Week Seven: Review pieces using E, B, G & D string notes. Review all of the riffs, chords and technical exercises that we've learned. 

Week Eight: Class material. Mini student recital.

Students will learn proper technique, learn how to read notes on the E, B, G & D strings, learn how to play simple riffs and simplified or full chords.
