Class Experience

US Grade Kindergarten - 1
In this one time class young learners will learn about all the sunrise and the sunset. They will also learn about what causes the sunrise and the sunset to take place, what causes the colors that we see during sunrise and sunset as well as many other interesting facts about the rising and setting of the sun.

5 minutes- This will be spent building background knowledge and discussing what learners already know about sunrises and sunsets.

20-25 minutes- I will use some of this time to explain what a sunrise and sunset are. I will share several pictures and facts about sunrises and sunsets. I will also explain several vocabulary words related to this topic (dusk, dawn, twilight, daybreak, and a few others). I will stop frequently to discuss what we've learned, point out details from pictures, explain why and how pictures are labeled certain ways, discuss key vocabulary and allow time for learners to share their own thoughts about what we're learning.

5 minutes- After the lesson is over I will summarize what was learned about sunrises and sunsets.

5-10 minutes- We will use this time to draw, color and label our own sunrise or sunset pictures. Time will be allotted for students who would like to share their drawings/pictures with the class.

5 minutes- I will wrap up the lesson by asking and answering questions about what each learner learned about sunrises and sunsets. If time permits I will have learners share what they learned/liked about the lesson.

I am SO excited to be teaching your young learner! **New to Outschool? Use code MRSTHORN2020 to save $20 today!**

I am an enthusiastic and goal driven teacher with an extensive background in education. I have a BA in elementary education with a minor in history. I am a certified, K-8 credentialed teacher with a TESOL (ELL, ESL) endorsement. I also worked for several years as a teachers-in-training coach, providing feedback and guidance to new teachers. I am a dedicated teacher who believes that ALL children can learn and am extremely passionate about sharing knowledge with others.

After teaching for over 18 years in the public school system, life took me in a new direction. I have now been teaching on Outschool for over 5 years, as well as running my own tutoring business. I am overjoyed to be able to teach reading, science, nature, social studies, math, and language arts classes in new and exciting ways :)!

I was a 1st grade teacher (ages 6 and 7, all subjects), for most of my teaching career. I have taught in all grade levels (K-12) in the after-school program and in various tutoring programs. I worked in a very diverse population which allowed me to be well trained in differentiating my instruction to meet the needs of ALL learners. I have found that small group instruction is a key to the most conducive learning. All of my classes that I teach on Outschool focus on small group, or individualized, instruction. This allows me the opportunity to make learning exciting for every child!

I live on a little farm, with my husband, nestled in the high desert of the United States of America. We love the great outdoors and spend as much time as we can enjoying nature. We spend all of our free time taking care of our animals, traveling, hiking, fishing and camping. I am passionate about bringing nature and the great outdoors into my teaching as much as I possibly can :).
