Class Experience

US Grade 6 - 9
Beginner Level
Learn the tools of the trade for scientific dissections in this beginning dissection class!

Using a hot dog, students will learn the tools needed to perform a dissection. Why a hot dog? A couple of reasons....first, it's easy to obtain and relatively cheap. Second, the thin casing of a hot dog closely resembles the membranes found in more difficult dissections. Cultivating good dissection technique in this class will keep the student from cutting a ligament or artery in a more advanced dissection class.

Student will begin the class by learning the names and uses of the tools in a standard dissection kit. Then they will be led into removing the outer layer of a hot dog while watching the instructor and performing this technique during class. Don't worry...mistakes are allowed!

Students will need to purchase a dissection kit before class, as well as having a couple of hot dogs (room temperature) to practice on. Make sure you work on a paper plate, or paper towels....something to keep your area clean while working. Once finished with this class, they will be ready for more advanced dissection classes including the earthworm, clam, and crayfish.

Recommended Order of Dissection Classes:
Beginning Dissection
Beginner Earthworm Dissection
Beginner Starfish Dissection
Beginner Clam Dissection
Intermediate Crafish Dissection
Intermediate Perch Dissection

Advanced Pig Dissection

Please note, fewer numbers of students may result in a shortened class time.

There will be no refunds issued for a student(s) missing class.
Learning Goals

Other Details

Parental Guidance
Student will be using dissection tools that can be sharp. Students must be mature enough in parents decision to utilize these tools during class independently.
Supply List
At least two hot dogs at room temperature (can be cool but not frozen).
A standard dissection kit. I have included the link to Home Science Tools which has a cheap standard kit for $5.60 (at the time of this writing). Amazon also has a couple for approximately $10. I personally recommend Home Science Tools. Not only is that where I purchase all of my dissection specimens but I have found them to be the most cost effective for these items.
Students may prefer to have disposable gloves on when dissecting.
A clean place to dissect your hot dog specimen.

I was a middle school science teach for 10 years and have taught on Outschool for 4 years. In that time, have lead hundreds of students through many dissections including the hot dog, earthworms, clams, crayfish, and sharks. In my college Zoology class, I was the only student to successfully extract the entire spinal nerve of a crayfish that the professor had ever had! I find dissections fascinating and a good stepping stone for any student interested in anatomy, physiology, zoology, or college sciences.
