Class Experience

US Grade Kindergarten - 3
Beginner Level
Let's write poems :)! Join me each week to learn how to write a different kind of poem! Each class session is structured like a mini-Writer's Workshop session. The beauty of Writer's Workshop is that students can write about whatever they want! Students do not need to be fluent spellers for this class. The main focus of this class is for students to brainstorm ideas with others, transfer their ideas to paper, write poems, build stamina with writing, boost confidence, and share their writing (poems) with others.

Class Structure:
5-10 minutes—Shared Writing—In shared writing, the teacher and students compose a poem together. I will write a poem using brainstorming and students' shared ideas.

5 minutes- Mini lesson- I will teach a quick writing lesson using the poem that we have composed together. This lesson will vary each week focusing on the skills listed below.

15-20 minutes- Independent Writing- Each learner will write a poem of their choosing. The focus of Writer's Workshop is for students to write about whatever their heart desires :). During this time students will be able to talk about what they are writing about and brainstorm/share their ideas with other students. Topic ideas will be shared with students who are having trouble coming up with ideas on their own.

5-10 minutes- Sharing Time- Each child will be able to share their poem with the group (but are not required to).

This class will be different EVERY time, so you are welcome to join as many times as you'd like! The skills may be repeated but the poems that we write together, and the poems that the children write, will be different in each class session :)!

I have been an elementary school teacher for over 19 years. The knowledge and skills that I have acquired throughout my teaching career allow me to help young learners sharpen their writing skills. I have been fully trained in the Lucy Calkins Writer's Workshop Curriculum. I have also attended numerous BER (Bureau of Education & Research) trainings focusing on Writer's Workshop and how to teach young learners how to write. As a lead teacher, I have conducted many workshops for new teachers focusing on the Writer's Workshop model. I have also helped to produce many young Writing Festival winners throughout my teaching career.
