Beginning Consonant Blends- CCVC

Students will learn to read words with beginning consonant blends (two consonants at the beginning of a word that have two separate sounds we say quickly, such as trap, drop, skit, and slim). This class assumes that students already know how to read CVC (consonant vowel consonant) words with a short vowel sound, such as dad, hop, kit, and pup. Students should know the letters in the alphabet and the sound that each letter makes. We will use movement and music to teach content, and games to reinforce learning.

Class #1- We will introduce the topic of beginning consonant blends. We will use movement to learn blends with the letter R, including Br, cr, dr, fr, gr, pr, and tr.

Class #2- We will practice blends with the letter R and read words with R blends and short vowels, such as drag, pram, grip, and drop. We will use games to practice these words.

Class #3- We will learn blends with the letter L, including bl, cl, fl, gl, pl, and sl.

Class #4- We will practice blends with both the letters R and L. We will read a short story with some of these blends and use games to practice words such as clip, glob, slat, and plus.

Class #5- We will use the knowledge of how consonant blends work to read blends with other letters, such as sn, sm, sp, squ, st, sw, tw. We will also introduce 3-letter blends str, spr, and spl, and read a few 5-letter words such as strip, sprig, and splat.

Class #6- We will practice all the blends we have learned. We will apply our knowledge of how consonants come together in blends to play a game with many different beginning blends.
