Welcome to Wild and Unstructured Learning! Students in this 6 week course will learn the basics of coding and how to use scratch Junior. We will cover how to open the app and begin a new creation, how to use the blocks to form an algorithm, how to change the background and character and how to create a sequence and debug the script where required. Learners will need to download Scratch JR on a separate device (or be able to share their screen if not on a separate device)
Syllabus
6 Lessons
over 6 WeeksLesson 1:
Cool Characters
Students will become familiar with the app and begin to use the buttons to understand what each button does and how they can be used to code a character sprite. Together we will watch a demonstration video and predict how the buttons will affect the character. Students will get the opportunity to play about with the buttons, characters and backgrounds and use conversational vocabulary to memorize what each button does. We will share our work and ideas with the group.
45 mins online live lesson
Lesson 2:
Grow and Shrink
In this lesson we will review lesson 1 and see how many buttons we can remember and what effect they have on the character. We will begin focusing on the buttons that tell the sprite to ‘grow’ and ‘shrink’, also noting how the values have an effect on how much they will grow/ shrink. During the lesson we will be using new characters, backgrounds and sprites to create an interactive scene. Finally students will use connection blocks and different starting blocks to create different outcomes.

Lesson 3:
Time to Move
During this lesson we will become aware of how each block has an impact on a character. We will discuss how good algorithms should have a start and an end and begin looking at how repeating the section we can create a longer lasting effect. Children will be given the opportunity to practice their skills learned and complete a task to show their understanding.
45 mins online live lesson
Lesson 4:
Repetition
In this lesson children are given a practice code that they are encouraged to use, to predict what may happen next and how they can change their blocks in order to affect the outcome. Different repetition blocks are used and children that are progressing at a quicker rate will also be given challenge cards to support their learning.
