Homework
1 hour per week. Yes, homework is given and is necessary to learn a language. Homework should not take over an hour during the whole week. Homework can be split up into segments depending on the student's needs and time management skills. I will supply the necessary components to complete the homework (printable handouts, texts, etc.).Assessment
Informal assessments are sent after each class.Class Experience
US Grade 5 - 10
Beginner Level
Previous experience or knowledge required: none. In this class, we will begin learning the Greek alphabet. Students will practice writing them. I will include printable handouts for them to learn to trace and write the Greek alphabet. We will write on the screen. They will learn the names of the Greek letters and how to pronounce them. As we progress, students will begin pronouncing words and phrases. They will start reading and translating very basic passages. We will listen to and watch videos of people performing the audio of these passages. We will practice them ourselves. We will also continuously write in Greek, increase our vocabulary, and translate. One important thing to note... I will stay on pace with the student. If we need to move faster, we will. If we need to go slower, we will. Everything is tailored to your learner. I teach in a lecture style, with slides, encouraging students to ask questions and interact with me. I believe education is a conversation, and it helps learners retain the information, rather than "memorize and forget it." No previous experience is required since this is Beginner Level Greek, however, it would be very advantageous if the students are well-versed in English grammar beforehand. If not, I can help them learn enough grammar to supplement what we are doing in Greek.
Learning Goals
Students will learn the Greek alphabet in the first class. They will leave this class being able to sound out Greek words. There is no grammar involved in the first class. We are just getting started. As we meet more often, they will begin reading and translating and learning Greek grammar.

Sources
I have created my own curriculum based on my previous studies. I draw mainly upon the Athenaze textbooks, Greek: An Intensive Course, and the Oxford Handbooks to Greek Grammar (and a few others). I also use online resources, such as audio files, to help with pronunciation, and for listening exercises (open resources from Cornell University).
Teacher expertise and credentials
3 Degrees
Master's Degree in History from University of South Florida
Bachelor's Degree in Foreign Language from University of Southern Mississippi
Bachelor's Degree in History from University of Southern Mississippi
I have a bachelor's and master's degree in foreign languages and history. I have taught and/or tutored this class at various levels and for various ages (middle school to university). I have traveled to and researched in the places I teach about, and I often include realia and cultural information to make the language come alive for the student. Classical languages still have so much impact on our own vocabulary and culture. It is exciting to see how we are connected to the past.
