I am passionate about the role of Latin in developing a child's intellect. Studying Latin builds your child's vocabulary: teaching them words like spectare (to gaze) from which we get the noun spectacles and spectator as well as the verb to spectate. Latin also 'sensitises' your child's mind, making them aware of how sentences are constructed and how to use verb tenses and prepositions correctly. This helps your child to understand complex texts and to write well. Before joining Outschool, I was the headmistress of a primary school (elementary school principal) and I have been a fully qualified classroom teacher for twenty years. I have a postgraduate qualification in education leadership and a bachelor’s degree in primary education. I originally trained in the United States but I qualified in the United Kingdom and I work in London. I have studied Latin for over five years and my teaching experience means that I understand how to explain concepts in English and Latin grammar simply and structure lessons well. I have worked with wide range of learners including gifted children; children with special educational needs or disabilities as well as children with a wide range of personalities and levels of motivation. If you have any questions or worries about your learner - please send me a message as I am happy to listen, discuss or advise.
Pupils will get more from this class if they read through and practise the vocabulary before the lesson begins. Practising the vocabulary first means that pupils come to the lesson ready to translate, parse and compose sentences.
