Class Experience

US Grade 2 - 5
This class is designed for young learners that are new to Spanish. I will use an immersion approach as much as possible where students will work with a small set of thematic vocabulary and we will speak, read, write and listen in the target language from the beginning. I use visuals, props and comprehensible input when introducing Spanish. The units are thematic and I incorporate a lot of basic vocabulary into a thematic unit.
For example during an animal unit we will learn basic animal names, adjectives to describe, correct use of El/la un/una, verbs to describe animals movements, and make short sentences to tell about an animal.

At the start of each class we focus on greetings, news and weather.
Then we introduce a small set of thematic vocabulary and we work to use that vocabulary in short sentences. I differentiate for learners by teaching them how to add adjectives such as big, small, and color words to the short sentences when possible.

We will cover basic vocabulary and use vocabulary in context such as short sentences or small paragraphs.

Since this is an ongoing class the lessons stand alone so a learner may join at anytime but the theme may continue for several weeks. Please see the theme/vocabulary covered below to have an idea of what we are working on.

I utilize props, TPR, text translations, and a variety of games so that new students feel comfortable joining at any time.

Students may need paper and colored writing utensils of their choice: markers, pencils or crayons. Please read classroom posts to see if there are new materials to bring. I often ask learners to find props or toys in their home.

There is no prerequiste to join this class but it will be important for students to have a basic reading and writing level in their first language. An adult nearby would be essential for the youngest learners.

I provide flashcards or hand outs in the classroom and a variety of extra practice ideas.

Some English is used in this class for clarification and explanations.

Since this is an ongoing class I will add dates one to two months at a time so long as the class minimum is met.

Sample lesson begins with a few minutes of welcome and greeting, answering how are you, how is your weather, do you have news to share.

Then we move on to the target objective/lesson topic.

Follow up notes and extra practice is typically provided after class.
