Does your child enjoy unique magical stories and drama? Essential Question(s): What happens when theatre artists use their imaginations and/or learned theatre skills while engaging in creative exploration? Social Emotional Goals: Self-Awareness - The ability to recognize one’s own emotions, thoughts, and values and how they influence behavior and to assess one’s strengths and limitations. Social Awareness - The ability to take the perspective of others and empathize with them, including those from diverse backgrounds and cultures, and to understand norms for behavior. Relationship Skills - The ability to communicate clearly, listen well, cooperate with others, resist inappropriate social pressures, and to seek and offer help when needed.
I am a certified theatre teacher and have directed magic-themed camps for nearly twenty years, weaving the dramatic arts with social emotional learning. I have a PhD in theatre from Louisiana State University, and my minor was in religious studies where I focused on mindfulness and meditation techniques. I have taught nonviolent communication and relationship skills in workshops at all age levels.
The teacher will be in "magical" costume and in character. Students are encouraged to attend class in costume if they wish. Students may mime or pretend all of their "weapons," but sometimes it's more fun to play with props (even if those props are simple). Here's a list of the weapons and tools we will be using. 1 - Sword (could be a play sword made of wood or foam, or even a stick. Maybe even a pool noodle. I wouldn't recommend a real metal sword. A laser sword/light saber is also an option). 2 - Dagger (same as above, only shorter. A short stick works.) 3 - Bow and arrow 4 - Crossbow 5 - A Cup (any sort of cup, though I usually use a goblet that looks like a healing chalice) 6 - A Cauldron (any sort of bowl) 7 - A Plate (any sort of plate) 8 - A Mirror
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Fear can be sensitive for younger children, but we will be focusing on solutions rather than problems. I will not be presenting any graphic examples, and we will try to stay away from any personal stories. Parents will be notified if anything concerning arises.
