US Grade 2 - 4
Beginner Level
This is a 4 week class for beginning photographers! Students will be taught a short lesson each week and then be assigned weekly photo challenges that will spark their imaginations and test their creative skills. Students are encouraged to inspire each other through their photo creations by sharing the photos they took each week in the classroom so they can discuss them. The following photo challenges will be assigned: 1. Creating Point of Interest, Rule of Thirds 2. Framing, Symmetry & Leading Lines 3. Big/Small & Perspective, Focus 4. Portrait Mode & Contrast/Colors Students are expected to participate in homework and uploading photos each week because a big part of our time together is sharing our photos and hearing about their photo creations. Students are strongly encouraged/expected to participate in the discussions with each other. There will be some videos and presentations that the teacher will use for class weekly. Teacher is approachable, energetic and engaging! The only experience is to have taken pictures with your camera before. This can be any type of camera you would like to use, i.e., a phone camera, point and shoot, etc are all welcome. Technical training on particular cameras is NOT a part of this class, however, specific questions can be answered as needed.
Learning Goals
Students will learn how to create pleasing photos in this class by learning about the subject, framing, and using rules of composition.
Other Details
Parental Guidance
The teacher uses YouTube to show a few clips of videos to support the student's learning. The videos are embedded in a presentation created by the teacher via Spark/Adobe. Sometimes the videos are also posted in the classroom. No ads are shown during the clips. The videos are age appropriate to speak directly to the learner specifically about the teaching point.
Supply List
A camera of any brand or style. I just recommend that it be easy for your child to use and something your child has already used before this class. I do not teach about the camera other than just the basics in this class.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.

Hello & Welcome! My name is Alyssa Chirch and I am your learner's photography teacher!
WHAT I TEACH
I offer full curriculum courses, in both live and self-paced formats, in photography for middle school and high school students, and 1:1 tutoring for photography. I have a set schedule and you will see my available times listed. If you don't see something that works for you, just ask!
MY BACKGROUND AND EDUCATION
Currently, I am working in admissions for Liberty University and also doing my graduate work to be a licensed mental health counselor (LMHC). I have a Bachelor of Arts degree in Bible & Ministry from Bethel College in Mishawaka, IN. I will be incorporating more classes that involve self expression and social emotional skills in the year of 2025-2026.
I love photography and have been teaching photography on Outschool since 2019. I have taught virtually or in-person for over 15 years in various subjects. In that time, I have taught English, Spelling, Reading, Physical Education, Praise Dance, Ballet, and Bible.
I have worked in the social work field with people with disabilities, as an employment specialist, a foster parent recruiter, and as a teacher in a school for kids that needed more support. These experiences have prepared me to work with all levels and abilities.
WHY & HOW I TEACH
My philosophy behind teaching is that I want every student to feel welcome and open to share in my classes. I want to create a place where the students feel comfortable interacting with each other as well as with me. I think it’s really great when the students help each other in class as well. I am very interactive and ask for feedback from my students to support their learning. This feedback can be verbal responses to questions about learning, sharing their photos and answering questions about them, or sharing what they like about certain concepts discussed in class. I also give positive encouragement and constructive feedback to help them in the learning process.
A LITTLE BIT ABOUT ME
In my spare time, I enjoy traveling with my family to experience new places. I have 5 kids, 3 are grown and 2 are still at home. I have kids with special needs, as well, which continues to prepares me to work with all sorts of learners. I love to draw and paint as a hobby and play with our 2 beloved cats, Felix & Marie (Disney names, if you know-you know). Fun fact about me, I love to exercise and explore health-related concepts to stay in good health.
