Beginners Caricature Class: Draw Yourself in cartoon!
Class experience
US Grade 5 - 8
Beginner Level
In this class, the student will learn what caricature is, how to emphasize certain features from their face and head to create a caricature of themselves from a photo (or using a mirror). I will go step-by-step on how to outline features of a face, and then demonstrate some different ways to emphasize particular features. The student will play with shapes and create a very personalized caricature of their own face. I enjoy feedback and questions from students as we progress, as I want...
We will begin with the basics of constructing a face with pencil, learning where the features typically go on the face and setting up guidelines before beginning to pencil in features. I will demonstrate some ways to exaggerate features such as the eyes, ears, nose, chin, lips, etc. and the student will decide which feature of their own to exaggerate and begin to create a sketch in pencil. Once the pencil sketch is drawn, we will look at how to use our markers to create the lines we want, whether thinner lines, (for teeth, irises/eyes), or thicker lines as well as blocks of solid black for shadows.
White Paper (cheap copy paper is my favorite on which to practice and learn) Pencil Eraser Black & Gray markers -I use the Crayola Broad Line as the tip works well for fine lines and I use the side angle to create slightly darker areas. The Target off-brand works equally well for about 1/2 the cost. I use the black for the primary caricature, and will use grey at the very end, to show how to use shadowing for a caricature that has more "depth".
I am a full time Gig/LIVE Caricature Artist for weddings, corporate events, parties, etc. and while that is my “bread & butter”, I love teaching what I’ve learned to kids on Outschool. I have an education degree and many years of experience...
