Beginner Level
In this class, the student will learn what caricature is, how to emphasize certain features from their face and head to create a caricature of themselves from a photo (or using a mirror). I will go step-by-step on how to outline features of a face, and then demonstrate some different ways to emphasize particular features. The student will play with shapes and create a very personalized caricature of their own face. I enjoy feedback and questions from students as we progress, as I want them to feel relaxed and enjoy a creative experience where they can learn from me and explore on their own at the same time. Students are welcome to share their creations with the class at the end. (This is optional.) ***IMPORTANT INFO FOR ALL OF MY CLASSES I will begin on time. Late arrivals must jump in and catch up as best they can and use the video after class to catch up. I am unable to re-start the class for late arrivals. Thank you for your understanding. I have a relaxed class atmosphere and as long as there is not a lot of household noise in the background, I am happy for students to keep their mics open for exchange during class. I use 2 cameras in this class. One is positioned on me and the other is directly above my art table. When we begin drawing, the student should pin the one over the art table and make it the largest pic on their screen so they can easily see what I'm drawing. If they are not familiar with this, or new to Zoom/Outschool, please let me know at the beginning and I'll all be sure to help walk them through it.
Learning Goals
We will begin with the basics of constructing a face with pencil, learning where the features typically go on the face and setting up guidelines before beginning to pencil in features. I will demonstrate some ways to exaggerate features such as the eyes, ears, nose, chin, lips, etc. and the student will decide which feature of their own to exaggerate and begin to create a sketch in pencil.
Once the pencil sketch is drawn, we will look at how to use our markers to create the lines we want, whether thinner lines, (for teeth, irises/eyes), or thicker lines as well as blocks of solid black for shadows.
Other Details
Supply List
White Paper (cheap copy paper is my favorite on which to practice and learn) Pencil Eraser Black & Gray markers -I use the Crayola Broad Line as the tip works well for fine lines and I use the side angle to create slightly darker areas. The Target off-brand works equally well for about 1/2 the cost. I use the black for the primary caricature, and will use grey at the very end, to show how to use shadowing for a caricature that has more "depth".
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I am a full time Gig/LIVE Caricature Artist for weddings, corporate events, parties, etc. and while that is my “bread & butter”, I love teaching what I’ve learned to kids on Outschool.
I have an education degree and many years of experience teaching and creating art, from fine art to crafty projects, from artful home projects to designing and painting theatre sets for plays and musicals on the stage.
I love to teach children the value of creating art that is a personal and meaningful expression of themselves, helping them loosen up and enjoy the process, the missteps and the "That's good enough to sell!" moments. LOL.
Open mics and sharing are encouraged.
I teach from my whimsical art studio in North Carolina and hope to see your child in a class soon. ~Penny
** Look for CARICATURE ART CAMPS coming up this summer. Each week, we will learn a new technique and enjoy working on our projects together in class. Three and 5-day camps will be available.
