Class Experience

US Grade 3 - 6
Beginner Level
In this four week class, students will learn the foundations of Blender and low-poly animation and rigging through over 10 hours of instructional video lessons, exercises, and hands-on projects. With material ranging from core animation principals, character rigging, and physics simulations, the course takes learners on an in depth journey through the Blender interface and tool set. By the end of this course, students will have built a strong and lasting foundation of skill that they can use as a jump start into a serious career in 3D art and animation.

This class goes far beyond a simple demonstration on how to animate a simple shape traveling around the screen. It's structured to ensure that each student, upon completing the course, will leave with a strong sense of confidence and competency with the tools that we cover. Topics are first discussed and demonstrated through step-by-step instructional videos. Then, concepts are solidified through a short series of exercises. Finally, each week students are challenged to complete a project that combines each of the concepts that we've worked on. Every single exercise and project has a full solution video and downloadable project file to help students if they get stuck or need extra guidance.

I work hard to ensure a consistent and high quality on-demand classroom experience. This includes clear and concise lesson plans, course structure, high fidelity audio and video, and accessibility considerations. If you have any questions you'd like answered before signing up, please don't hesitate to reach out!

Please note: While this course is appropriate for absolute beginners, I do highly recommend that students bring some level of familiarity with the basic Blender interface and controls. This is because while I do narrate and display each and every mouse click and keypress, we do not take the time in this course to learn and review basic controls. So, while this course is completely accessible to someone who has never opened Blender before, I believe that learners will have a more productive experience if they have at least a base level of experience with the program.

If you are looking for a great first entry into the world of 3D before taking on this more robust animation course, I recommend my highly rated and reviewed Blender Bootcamp for Absolute Beginner's course found here on Outschool: https://outschool.com/classes/intro-to-3d-modeling-blender-bootcamp-for-absolute-beginners-M7B9y4Ny

Notes:
This course does not cover fully populated complex scenes, photo-realistic animations, advanced character work, or video game engine importing. It does, however, build the skills necessary to approach these topics.

A standard 3-button mouse is highly recommended but not required for class. If you are using an older computer or laptop, please refer to the blender system requirements page to ensure your computer is capable of running Blender. https://www.blender.org/download/requirements/
Learning Goals
Students will feel confident with the basic Blender interface and animation tools including keyframes, armatures and rigging, and physics simulations.

How Youtube is used in this course: No account is required. Each week I will post all of the video content in a single slide-based presentation with the videos and helpful tips embedded within it. I also post each video link individually within the Classroom. These videos will play within an embedded video player on the Outschool website. How Blender is used in this course: This course uses Blender, a free and open source program for creating 3D models and animation. No account is needed. I may sometimes ask students to send me screenshots of their Blender window in order to troubleshoot technical issues. Hello! I'm Joey and I'm excited to meet you. As a parent, I understand how vital early childhood education is. The fact that you are here, searching for the best instructor for your learners, means that you know how important it is too. I take this responsibility seriously, and work hard to provide individual attention and support to all of my students.

I've worked professionally as a software developer, as well as an adjunct college professor teaching introductory and advanced computer programming courses. My passions and class topics are wide ranging, from tabletop role-playing games to 3D modeling, astronomy, and art! To each of my classes I bring the same philosophy: that we truly grow when we connect what we learn to what is important to us. No matter if it's academic study or a social activity, I teach with the intention of inspiring students to make those connections and get excited about learning. I can't wait to see you in class!
