What's included

1 live meeting
55 mins in-class hours per week
Homework
1-2 hours per week. There will be lessons to practice online setup by the teacher. Students are in charge of completing their lessons as they are able to. The more they practice the more their wpm (words per minute) will increase as well as their accuracy. They will have some time in class to work on their lessons, but not all lessons will allow for time to be completed in class which means it may take time outside of class too. The lessons are not graded. Students may or may not finish all lessons depending on how long they take to complete them and how much time they have to devote to practicing. This varies student to student so I do not require all lessons to be finished, but I do hope students will practice each day if time allows!
Assessment
Students complete a one minute typing test on the first day we have class. The final day is when the second one minute typing test is administered to show slight to great improvement. Students are given a certificate if they use the login I’ve given them. The one minute typing tests are not for grades. These are simply to give students motivation to practice and improve. They work toward their own goals of improving as each student will have a different words per minute score based off of their age, experience and time given to practice.

Class Experience

US Grade 1 - 4
Beginner Level
PLEASE NOTE: Weeks/sessions may be combined if this class is set as private due to only one learner at a time in the class for a one-on-one session.

Prior to class beginning, there will website information shared in the classroom tab and login information will be sent as a private message to each student. The site used for practice of what we’ve learned is shared often in the classroom tab as a new post for learners to be able to access the site out of class hours for practice when they are able to do so. It will be titled, “Typing Site Information” under each post as a link to click. A new window will open with the link to the typing site at the top and login information at the bottom. This is a great printable for your student to have near them at the start of each class so they too can know how to login in!

At the beginning of each class, students will be given an activity or a question to answer which helps all of the learners get to know each other. Students who are too shy do not have to participate. Only those who want to share will be called on. The chat box is set to privately message the teacher should students want to share without others knowing.

This is an interactive course taught over the course of _ weeks (1x a week) to help students learn how to type properly, efficiently and have fun doing it! Students learn how to type the letters of the alphabet, numbers, the main punctuation we use almost daily, our name, some symbols and we will use the home row or home keys to practice proper positioning. Proper posture is key as well! We will also practice what we learn using a website, the chat box and teacher created games to add fun to the learning process. Our typing practice will be in the form of lessons completed on the typing site as well as requested chat box messages.

***PLEASE NOTE: All activities requiring use of the chat box will occur with the chat messages set to private so only the host (aka: the teacher) will see the messages. Activities and games will be provided by the teacher for each lesson or derive from the typing site.

To begin class, each student will be allowed time to introduce him/herself and answer a question of the day to warm us up. We will have relaxed conversations at the beginning of each class following the first week to get to know each other and build community in class. The more relaxed students are, the better they type!

Week 1: To begin our first day, we will have a warmup to allow the class to become familiar with one another (no one is required to share if they are uncomfortable doing so). Following our introductions, we will practice using the chat box and learn all about the keyboard. We will also practice proper positioning, proper posture, how to login to the typing site we will use for some of our practice, take a 1 minute typing test to see how fast can we type now versus at the end of the class, and if time allows, we will have a challenge along with a game! Day 1 is a busy day!

Week 2: We will begin class with a 5 minute or less discussion (no one is required to share if they are uncomfortable doing so). Following our discussion, we will dive in to review what we have learned so far for the new comers, learn a mnemonic, practice typing our name to learn the letters of our name on the keyboard, practice backspace, practice spacebar, learn the rules of using the shift buttons and all of this will tie together with a fun set of games created by me!

Week 3: At the start of class, we will all share (no one is required to share if they are uncomfortable doing so) to get us warmed up to each other. Following the warmup, we will begin reviewing what we have previously learned for new comers. Next, we will begin learning the homerow keys. We will have plenty of practice with the homerow keys along with a fun game and a fill in the blank challenge to help us practice our typing skills.

Week 4: Our class will begin like the others with a five minute or less get to know each other time (no one is required to share if they are uncomfortable doing so). We will learn the U, R, and K keys, we will use the typing site to practice these keys and we will have additional practice through fun games created by the teacher.

Week 5: Class will begin as we have before with a short question of the day, a discussion or sharing time about our previous weekend/week (no one is required to share if they are uncomfortable doing so). We will then dive in the D, E, and I lesson to thoroughly learn these keys. We will practice these keys through planned activities and games.

Week 6: Our focus during this week will be C, G and N keys following a short introduction/discussion time. (no one is required to share if they are uncomfortable doing so). We will continue our practice of these keys through fun games, challenges and using the typing site to complete the lesson practice through typing exercises provided by the site.

Week 7: To begin class, we will have our sharing time to get us warmed up to each other (no one is required to share if they are uncomfortable doing so). Following the warmup session, we will begin learning about the T, S and L keys. We will use site practice, challenges, games and more to practice these keys as well as others.

Week 8: W, X and ; will be our focus for class following our sharing time (no one is required to share if they are uncomfortable doing so). We will practice these keys and others through using the typing site practice lessons, games created by the teacher and challenges created by the teacher. Come join in the fun!

Week 9: Our class will begin with a warmup to allow the class to become familiar with one another (no one is required to share if they are uncomfortable doing so). Following our introductions, we will dive into the punctuation keys. We will learn all about the main keys we use on a regular basis to create punctuation in our typing. This will be followed, if time allows, with games, challenges, and more games. We will also have a lesson the typing site to complete for additional practice.

Week 10: To start the class off right, we will have a small amount of time devoted to getting to know one another (no one is required to share if they are uncomfortable doing so). Following our opening, we will have time spent using the chat box, a fill in the boxes challenge, and games setup by the teacher to help us practice our knowledge of the keyboard key locations as well as our typing skills. We will then use our typing site, if time allows, to continue this practice. We will be challenging ourselves to race against our own wpm.

Week 11: For today's class, we will begin with our five minutes or less discussion time to get comfortable with one another (no one is required to share if they are uncomfortable doing so). Once we are warmed up and ready to roll, we will dive into learning the O, B and A keys. To practice what we have learned, we will use the typing site, teacher created fill in the blanks activities, a game and we will return to the site to work on more lessons if time allows.

Week 12: For our class, we will spend time going over what we have learned so far for newcomers, warm up with a discussion amongst all of us to get to know each other and build rapport, while also learning all about the V, H and M keys. We, of course, will have typing practice via the typing site, games and activities. I look forward to seeing you there!

Week 13: Our class will focus on the O, Y and P keys after we have a five minutes or less discussion time to warm the class up. We will have typing site practice, games, a fill in the keyboard activity, and more! Come join the fun!

Week 14: Today will be a great day to learn how to type Z and how to properly type using the enter key. We will apply what we have learned by using the typing site lessons and practice as well as a game created by the teacher for this particular key set.

Week 15: Let's learn numbers and symbols! After a five minute or less discussion to get to know each other (no one is required to share if they are uncomfortable), we will dive right in. For this week, we will tackle learning how to type numbers and symbols listed across the top of the keyboard. We will learn proper technique as well as have tons of fun practicing these keys!

Week 16: Following our five minutes or less discussion to get us warmed up, we will begin practicing typing skills. This week will not be a new lesson on new keys, but we will spend time practicing the keys of the keyboard and completing activities as well as games created by the teacher which challenge us to think about where the keys are located on the board. This is not a new lesson so anyone can join this week for added practice and challenges. I look forward to seeing you in class!

Week 17: Once we have warmed up to each other with a question of the day or a discussion topic (no one is required to share if they are uncomfortable), we will begin a practice session for any and all keys of the keyboard. This is not a new lesson or a review lesson. It is simply a time to apply what we know about the keyboard, proper positioning, proper posture and reaching for the keys appropriately without using our index fingers to hunt and peck the keys. We will be using a variety of materials to challenge ourselves in our typing. Expect to see a geography theme, a speech theme, a class community building theme, and a word challenge in this class!

Week 18: Following a brief warmup to get to know one another, we will have all kinds of fun typing! Using parts of speech, places, memories, and months of the year, we will have all kinds of fun in this class! You do not need to know all parts of speech for this class to work for you. I will be going over them during class so no one is left out! Our typing skills will improve with these fun activities!

Week 19: One more day of practice never hurt anyone! Following our "get to know you" time (no one is required to share if they are uncomfortable), we will have a blast! For this day, we will focus on practicing the typing skills we do know (anyone can join this day and be at any level of typing just like the other days-we are just practicing today). We will have two different, but similar, word puzzle games, a guessing game and we will be using the typing site to practice our typing skills. SO MUCH FUN TO BE HAD! I hope you will join us!

Week 20: Following our "get to know you" time (no one is required to share if they are uncomfortable), we will complete a 1 minute typing test to see how fast can we type. Students who use the login I create for them will receive a certificate stating their words per minute and accuracy along with their name that will be sent to their Outschool messages to be printed anytime. We will have a fun day following our typing test full of typing fun once everyone is finished. While we wait on our classmates to finish their typing test (it can be taken as many times as we want to take it), we will then pair up for games or perhaps play a class game or even individually play games on the typing site. Fun will be had in some way and all will be welcome to join in!
Learning Goals
Students will build community and become connected to those they share time with in class through sharing, playing challenges against the teacher together, and we will be working toward the same goal together-building confidence and improving our typing skills.

Parental Guidance
Students are given a login to the typing site via the Outschool Messages center prior to class beginning or when they join. Please advise students to use this login and not their own so I can keep track of progress, monitor their practice times and help them see what they still need to work on or encourage them when they improve. When another login is used, I am unable to see all of that information. We will be using typing.com for some of the practice, but I have created my own games and activities to use in class as well. There may be ads on the site as I do not pay for the typing site at this time (I may in the future), but they have yet to be anything alarming. Please monitor the ads at your own discretion should they pop up. There are tools to turn off the sounds and change the visuals of the site at the student's discretion due to various needs or preferences. If you need any assistance with this, please notify me through Outschool Messaging!
Pre-Requisites
No prerequisites.
Supply List
Students will need to be able to access the chat box on zoom and get online to practice their typing lessons. It is recommended to write down the login information I send students in messages on Outschool to give your learner a visual to follow when we login each day during class.

I have been typing at 88-120 wpm since 2000. I was a teacher assistant in high school for my typing instructor due to my proficiency in typing and I have taught students of all ages on my own, as well as on Outschool, how to type proficiently since 2020. I thoroughly love seeing student's progress and smile as they do even in the tiniest way. Getting to be their cheerleader brings me joy!
