Class Experience

Learners should be able to "hit the ground running" and play right after class. Using a chess board and demonstrating each topic, I outline all the segments of the game.
In week one I explain the name and movement of each piece.
I teach the International Chess Federation grid system so learners can play with anyone anywhere in the world. Students will learn how to set up the board.
I love the game and enthusiastically encourage students to learn, practice, and find a club!
In week two we will discuss the Scholars Mate- a 4-move checkmate strategy! Using the grid system learners will know the coordinates to affect a "coup de grace". Although it is a well-known series of moves, most beginners and intermediate players don't know it and your student will be able to amaze and win! We will touch on the Fool's Mate - a 2 move checkmate!
In week three I will show the ways to avoid being checkmated by the Scholars Mate and Fool's Mate. We will also discuss "pawn promotion" to understand why it is not a good strategy to just throw your pawns away!
In week four students will learn En Passant and Castling. When these moves are strategically smart and when to let them go.
In week five we will discuss the skewer and fork.
Week six will go over the Pin and baiting and 'squirreling'. The latter is a technique to stay on task.
In week seven we will go over the 3 different ways to effect a stalemate and when this is a good tactic.
Our last week we will recap the 3 elements to look for in a move: a threat, a capture, or a check. Students will understand how to "look both ways" before making a move. Throughout our weeks together, students will learn how to look for opportunities and how to avoid getting trapped in them.
Students will get a peek at the FDIC titles and where to find skill-strengthening chess puzzles.
