Class Experience

Let's have fun learning basic tap and jazz skills!!! Each class in this semester long course will consist of both tap & jazz genres. This class is for students with zero to limited dance experience and is conducted at a beginner pace.

Tap shoes are optional and not needed for the tap portion, as dancers can either use tennis shoes or dance bare foot. If using tap shoes, a small tap board is recommended (1/4 inc. plywood square in whatever size you desire) in order to protect the floor in your home. Jazz shoes are also optional and not required, as dancers can dance barefoot for jazz.

The first part of class will be dedicated to Broadway style tap while the second part of class will cover classical jazz. We will learn how to do warm ups in each genre before moving on to new skills/practice of previously learned skills, technique, and learn a part of our recital dance each week.

I will teach by demonstration and verbal explanation. Each child will have a chance to voluntarily demonstrate throughout the semester for individual feedback that the entire group can learn from. General corrections and dance tips will be given to the entire class throughout each lesson, as well.

Week1: Introduction to first part of Tap & Jazz Warm ups; basic use of heels and taps in the center and across the floor for tap; preparation for turns, basic traveling steps in jazz; basics of counting music and rhythm work; first few 8-counts of tap and jazz recital dance learned

Week 2: Additional warm up skills with taps/heels added to warm ups (tap)/stretches (jazz); technique practice with heels/taps from week 1 (tap) and with turns and traveling steps (jazz), new steps with heels/taps (tap)/traveling and turns (jazz), additional 8-counts of recital pieces learned

Week 3: Additional warm up skills added with tap/heels (tap)/stretches (jazz); technique & rhythm work in tap/jazz with previously learned steps; additional combination of heels/taps (tap)/new traveling steps and new turns learned (jazz); additional 8-counts added to recital pieces

Week 4: Warm ups and practice of technique & rhythm work in tap/jazz with previously learned steps; finish mini-recital piece

Week 5: Warm ups and rehearsal

Week 6: Warm ups, practice, and final performance of mini-recital pieces

*Specific skills, curriculum, and pace will vary by section as teacher adjusts in live time to student needs/skills.

Other Details

Parental Guidance
If students need help staying on task or working the computer or app, parents may wish to monitor from the same room or within sight distance for the first few lessons. The room should be as free of distractions as possible and student should have at least a few feet to move around. Jazz requires more room than tap, but can be done in a small space. Please advise teacher in advance of any special needs or any recent injuries that will limit movement. While great caution is taken and skills will be appropriate for beginner students, accidental falls, etc. can still happen and teacher is not responsible for any injuries that occur during the course of the classes.
Supply List
Comfortable & appropriate clothing required for class. Recommended to pull hair up/back so that it is out of the face to make it easier to turn, etc. No jean shorts or pants, as this restricts movement for jazz.

Recommended clothing:
-leggings and form fitting shirt or top (baggy tops or bottoms make it hard to give corrections for upper body placement and difficult to tell if their legs are bent or straight); alternatively leotard and tights are best, but not required

Optional:
-tap shoes and tap board (1/4 inch cut of plywood 2' x 3')
-jazz shoes of any style or color
-barre or something like a chair to use as a barre for balance in tap warm ups
