In this class, beginning sewers will use their sewing machines to create a scrunchie. We will start by measuring and cutting the material and elastic to the correct size. Then we will discuss how to fold it and where to sew on the material, and how to back-stitch over each end. We will also learn about turning our fabric, and inserting the elastic. At the end of class, we will discuss a few finishing options. For this class, learners need to know how to turn their sewing machine on, how to thread it (or have it threaded before class), how to change the stitch (running stitch/basic straight stitch to zigzag stitch), and how to sew in reverse.

In this class, we will be using sewing machines. Please have an adult nearby to supervise.
Supply List
Sewing machine (threaded with thread that matches the scrunchie fabric)* Pins 6" by 30" piece of fabric (any kind will work, cotton is recommended as it is easier to work with) Thin elastic (0.5" or narrower, or thin braided elastic works best) Scissors *Please no "kids sewing machines." They often don't have the functions needed for class, and malfunction easily. I want this class to be fun for learners, and be full of 'wins' and kid sewing machines often prevent this.

Hello! My name is Whitney and I am so excited to have the opportunity to share my expertise with you! I have a Bachelors degree from Florida State University, and I have over 10 years of teaching experience. I have taught formally in a preschool classroom, and I currently teach ESL online. I have also taught horseback riding, rowing, canning, Sunday school, and I look forward to sharing my classroom with you!
I believe that learning should be FUN! Some times a bit messy, maybe a bit silly, but always full of smiles and laughter. I believe that we remember what we learn best when we remember the experience as a positive one. I also believe that life can be one of the greatest educators. I love to bring real life examples into my classes.
When I am not spending with my family and dogs, I enjoy teaching sewing classes, budgeting classes, science, English, art, and having a fun and educational story time for young learners. Often times, I will bring my dogs to class as teaching tools!
