Class Experience

We will begin this class with introductions, ensuring that everyone has their video and audio on and working. We will proceed into introducing ourselves and our recorders. In the first class we will learn some of the basics, such as how to hold our recorders properly, the ins and outs of fingerings and making our first sound. They will learn the song at first by following along with me as I do the fingerings. Then I will show them how those sounds relate to the musical notes on the page.

Our first class will involve learning the first 3 notes. These three notes will be the notes needed for the first three songs in recorder Karate: Hot Cross Buns, Gently Sleep, and Merrily We Roll Along.

For this class, the student will need be comfortable knowing how to unmute themselves and have their video on. I’ll be unmuting each student individually to have them play back parts of the song or make sounds so that I can ensure they are understanding one part of the lesson before moving onwards.

After the first class, please check out the classroom, where I will add the link and password to use the online streamed recordings of the songs for practicing at home. This is also where I will put up the song pdf’s. They will only be available for the 6 weeks of the section.

Learning Goals

Each song is assigned a belt colour, and the challenge is to learn and “earn” new belts by learning songs through practicing. In the beginner belt class, we will explore the introduction to recorder, beginning with the first three belts – White – Hot Cross Buns, Yellow – Gently Sleep and Orange – Merrily we Roll Along.

Supply List
For this class we will be using a student soprano recorder with Baroque fingerings. There are different styles of recorders out there, so please make sure that your child has the correct one. I recommend and will be using this one: https://www.musick8.com/store/alphadetail.php?product_group=289&cat_id=26&display=subcat&subcat_id=217
I will provide a pdf copy of each of the three songs. There is a student workbook available for purchase that contains much more detail and all of the belt songs. You can access it at the website here:

Teacher expertise and credentials
As a Music teacher I have had a wide variety of different teaching opportunities, from teaching one on one, to public and private school classrooms, to homeschoolers and most recently online! I have a degree in teaching as well as a degree in French Studies, with additional teaching qualifications in Instrumental Music. I am a professional trumpet player who has taught beginner music for many years. I also dabble in a few other instruments here and there, such as piano, ukelele and guitar. I look forward to helping children foster a love for language, a love for music and a love for learning.
