In this 16-week introduction to the European Portuguese world language beginner course, learners will develop the basic skills to communicate, read, and write in the Portuguese language through in-class exercises, games, music and more.

Learners will learn about the subject pronouns and their usage in sentences, gaining a foundational understanding of how they function in conversation. Students will also learn key vocabulary related to family members, enhancing their ability to discuss familial relationships in context.

Learners will learn about the conjugation and uses of the verb ser, gaining insights into its role in describing identity and characteristics. Students will also learn key vocabulary related to professions and jobs, allowing them to engage in conversations about careers and work environments with confidence.

Learners will continue to explore the conjugation and uses of ser, focusing on its role in expressing professional identities. Students will engage in interactive activities that reinforce key vocabulary related to various professions and workplace scenarios, allowing them to articulate their aspirations and experiences in the world of work.

Learners will learn about the conjugation and uses of the verb estar, emphasizing its role in describing feelings and emotions. Students will also expand their vocabulary related to various emotions, enabling them to express their states of being and emotional experiences in conversations effectively.

Estar (to be); Key Vocabulary: Feelings and Emotions

Learners will deepen their understanding of estar by exploring its applications in different contexts, such as temporary states and conditions. Students will participate in engaging activities to practice using vocabulary related to feelings and emotions, enhancing their ability to articulate personal experiences and emotional responses in everyday conversations.

Learners will learn about the regular -ar verbs in the present tense, focusing on their conjugation and appropriate usage in various contexts. Students will build key vocabulary related to hobbies and leisure activities, allowing them to discuss their interests and pastimes more confidently in conversation.

Regular -ar Verbs: Present Tense; Key Vocabulary: Hobbies and Leisure

Learners will engage in exercises designed to reinforce their understanding of regular -ar verbs in the present tense, including fill-in-the-blank and sentence creation activities. Students will also apply key vocabulary related to hobbies and leisure in contextual exercises, enabling them to express their interests and preferences while enhancing their conversational skills.

Learners will begin by reviewing and correcting their homework. Next, students will complete sentences related to their hobbies, incorporating regular -ar verbs to enhance their descriptions. Students will then share their interests in Portuguese during a class discussion, practicing their speaking skills. To conclude, the lesson will feature a review exercise centered on -ar verbs, enabling students to reinforce their understanding through conjugation practice.

Project Presentations: Review of -ar Verbs

In the second part of the lesson, learners will deepen their project presentations by expanding on their hobbies and using a variety of regular -ar verbs for more detailed descriptions. After the presentations, the class will engage in a comprehensive review of -ar verbs through interactive exercises designed to reinforce conjugation and usage. Activities will include conjugation drills.

Learners will learn about the Regular -er Verbs in the Present Tense, focusing on their conjugations and exceptions. Students will also acquire key vocabulary related to Meals and Menus.

Learners will focus on a Review of -er Verbs, primarily through various exercises designed to reinforce their understanding and usage. Students will engage in activities that include conjugation drills. Following the review, students will read a short story titled "Um Almoço à Sexta-Feira," which will provide an engaging context for using their vocabulary and verb knowledge.

Review -er Verbs; Short Story: Um Almoço à Sexta-Feira

Learners will continue reviewing -er Verbs through engaging exercises, including conjugation drills. Students will also read the short story "Um Almoço à Sexta-Feira," which demonstrates the practical use of these verbs. Following the story, students will complete an exercise where they write their own short stories using the verbs learned in the lesson.

Learners will learn about the Irregular Verbs in the Present Tense, focusing on their unique conjugations and usage. Key vocabulary related to Weather will also be introduced, enabling students to describe different weather conditions effectively.

Learners will continue their exploration of Irregular Verbs in the Present Tense, building on the concepts introduced in Part 1. Students will focus on using these verbs in context, particularly when discussing the Weather Forecast.

Irregular Verbs Part 2: Present Tense & Key Vocabulary: Weather Forecast

In the final project titled "A Day in My Life," learners will develop a multimedia presentation that highlights their daily routines while incorporating vocabulary and grammar learned throughout the course. Students will have the flexibility to choose from various formats, such as PowerPoint presentations, videos, or posters, allowing for creativity and personal expression.
