In this 8-week course, students will go from piano novice to rhythm reader, melody player, and confident performer! Let's explore the keyboard, play with two hands, and build confidence at the start of our piano journey!

Class experience

Students will explore all keys of the piano
Students will play the piano with their hands individually and together
Students will learn new musical rhythms, including the quarter note, half note, whole note, and dotted half note
Students will explore different dynamics (volume levels) on the piano
Students will learn the Musical Alphabet and be able to identify all white keys on the keyboard with their proper letter name
Students will play simple songs using a steady beat, proper rhythms, and correct piano form
Homework Offered
A short homework assignment will be discussed with learners at the end of class. Learners are encouraged to practice something specific that we went over in our class and to review previous learning. With young learners, 5-10 minutes of guided practice with an adult will help strengthen finger muscles and help retain information to be used in our next lesson.
0 - 1 hours per week outside of class
Assessments Offered
Grades Offered
Faber & Faber Piano Adventures Primer Level LESSON BOOK
A piano or electronic keyboard with at least four octaves (48 keys) and preferably weighted keys (keys that when pressed using different amounts of force, will change the volume)
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
- We will use a drag-and-drop activity in Nearpod to label the keys of the keyboard with their correct musical letter name. A specific link will be posted in the Outschool classroom
- We will play a Kahoot review game, requiring students to enter a waiting room using https://kahoot.it/
The game PIN number will be provided by the teacher during the lesson and students will only be allowed to use appropriate nicknames as we play. The teacher will moderate at all times.
- We will use Gimkit to review our prior learning, including audio sound bites that will require working sound to hear. The student will log in at https://www.gimkit.com/join
A game code will be provided live during class and students will only be allowed to use appropriate nicknames as we play. The teacher will moderate at all times.
- We will use Google Shared Piano to improve our understanding of the piano while interacting with other students in the class. The teacher will ask questions of the students and students will show their answers using the live piano. All learners will be invited to join the same piano via a specifically generated link, which can only be generated in real time.
