Class Experience

US Grade 1 - 4
Beginner Level
Every class meeting will begin with a teacher and student intro where students answer a fun question of the day to get to know each other.

We will be learning all about maps in this class, so our first class will be a discussion about why we have maps in our world, who makes maps and where can we find maps.

This discussion will lead into answering the question, "What do we see on a map?" This will help us see why it is important to understand the key on a map and what each symbol represents.

We will practice reading symbols, placing symbols on a map to label locations, and we will be drawing symbols for our own maps to begin creating our key. Landforms will be discussed during this class too.

The second class will be a class started just like the first one, except the focus will be sharing our homework assignment with each other and going over directions. We will learn location related words like left, right, up, down, next to, beside, etc. Students will get to learn the fun chant, "Never eat sour worms" to remember north, south, east and west. We will also start to apply these by reading a map together that I believe will spark students interests. We will plan a route on our class map together to see the things each student would want to see and make our route simple to apply what we have learned.

For our third class, we will have completed another homework assignment which students will need to bring to class to share what they did for homework and we will be adding to this assignment during our class. Our assignment will also be used as a class activity. Be sure you bring yours to class!

The fourth class is a wrap up of what we have learned by adding a fun twist to it. Students will get to work together to create a class field trip! I will save the details of this class field trip so as to surprise students and let them have their fun creating it in person (which builds more community). =)

I cannot wait to plan our class field trip together!

See you in class soon!

Parental Guidance
Parents are always welcomed! Students may need assistance with some of the homework, but the hope is it is something they can create on their own to help parents out with not adding to their load. Students will be encouraged to share with their parents what they have created to feel proud of what they have accomplished and learned.

    Hello!

I am Lauren Cannon and I love getting to teach students from all over the world!

Living very close to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park in the small town of Sylva has brought me so much joy and inspires me to spend as much time as possible outdoors. I enjoy hiking, seeing wildlife like a black bear, skunks, raccoons, lizards, skinks, opossums, snakes of every kind (eek!), insects of all kinds, and a bobcat on a regular basis at my house! I sometimes see them, or remnants of their time at our house in our garden or my cats bring them to our front door. Ha! We also enjoy spending time as a family swimming and gem mining in the rivers and lakes, traveling, or fishing and going for family rides off road from time to time.

While teaching and tutoring on my own or with Outschool, I am always finding some way to make learning fun by creating fun printables, virtual field trips, games and finding some way to make learning an experience to remember for everyone.

As a former Elementary School Teacher, I have always strongly believed in everyone getting to have a voice. Just like with genealogy, I love getting to hear everyone's story! Each child deserves to have a voice and to be heard. I do my best to make sure each student is heard in the classroom within reason or without taking away from our classmates class time.

I truly enjoy getting to help students have fun, but I also love getting to see their faces light up when they feel good about their learning. Seeing students learn and make progress in their learning blesses me beyond measure.

If you feel you have not had a good experience during a class we had together, please reach out to me in messages and let me know. I am looking for ways to improve and your input helps me be my best for my students.

Thank you for taking the time to get to know me.

I cannot wait to see you in the classroom!
