Beginner Level
Every class meeting will begin with a teacher and student intro where students answer a fun question of the day to get to know each other. We will be learning all about maps in this class, so our first class will be a discussion about why we have maps in our world, who makes maps and where can we find maps. This discussion will lead into answering the question, "What do we see on a map?" This will help us see why it is important to understand the key on a map and what each symbol represents. We will practice reading symbols, placing symbols on a map to label locations, and we will be drawing symbols for our own maps to begin creating our key. Landforms will be discussed during this class too. The second class will be a class started just like the first one, except the focus will be sharing our homework assignment with each other and going over directions. We will learn location related words like left, right, up, down, next to, beside, etc. Students will get to learn the fun chant, "Never eat sour worms" to remember north, south, east and west. We will also start to apply these by reading a map together that I believe will spark students interests. We will plan a route on our class map together to see the things each student would want to see and make our route simple to apply what we have learned. For our third class, we will have completed another homework assignment which students will need to bring to class to share what they did for homework and we will be adding to this assignment during our class. Our assignment will also be used as a class activity. Be sure you bring yours to class! The fourth class is a wrap up of what we have learned by adding a fun twist to it. Students will get to work together to create a class field trip! I will save the details of this class field trip so as to surprise students and let them have their fun creating it in person (which builds more community). =) I cannot wait to plan our class field trip together! See you in class soon! Teacher Lauren
Learning Goals

Parental Guidance
Parents are always welcomed! Students may need assistance with some of the homework, but the hope is it is something they can create on their own to help parents out with not adding to their load. Students will be encouraged to share with their parents what they have created to feel proud of what they have accomplished and learned.
Supply List
Paper and drawing/coloring materials.

Hello!
I am Lauren Cannon, a former brick and mortar teacher now obsessed with getting to help students reach their full potential while hopefully having fun along the way!
Living with my family close to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park has brought me not only joy, but plenty of experiences which have taught me many things about teaching.
After teaching in the brick and mortar setting, I began working for an accountant in my hometown. While there, I discovered my love for teaching growing again and shortly after I had my daughter. When she was about to turn a year old, I decided to work from home instead of taking her to the office with me each day. She was much more mobile and the office was not ideal for a mobile toddler. She outgrew the office and I grew to love teaching again!
This is where VIPKID came into my life. I worked from home part time for the accounting office and for VIPKID at the same time. Teaching students one on one from halfway around the planet was one of the coolest jobs I had aside from being a mom, wife and teaching students all over WNC of course.
In 2020, I discovered Outschool and began teaching on my own as families I knew in my area and a special friend of mine I met around then from over seas encouraged (more like pushed-but in a good way) me to go on my own. I still get asked to homeschool for others and I hope one day I can find a way to balance it all so I can!
Since 2007, teaching/tutoring on my own has grown and Outschool has remained. I'm extremely grateful for all of the students and families I have met over the years!
My goal is to meet students where they are, find ways to connect learning for them in the most engaging way I can creatively teach, and help them build their confidence to be pursue their dreams without letting anything get in their way. I hope and pray for families to get to see their students grow and I'm grateful when I get to be part of that process. =)
I cannot wait to get to meet you and your family in the classroom soon!
~Lauren
