This is a one day a week course taught over the course of 6 weeks via videos created by the teacher to help students learn how to type properly, efficiently and have fun doing it! No live meetings for this course. This is a flex format class so students will receive an educational video created by the teacher posted to the classroom each week. You can expect videos to be between 8-15 min long and they will cover the topics listed below: Week 1: Proper Keyboarding-hand positions, finger positions and pre-assessment. Practice with f, j, space bar and the keyboard online in a classroom created by the teacher. Students will receive their login information in the video as well as posted to the classroom (logins are the same for all students with only their names changing for the login information). Homework will be assigned for at home typing practice in the online classroom and scores will be saved by the teacher for each homework assignment and assessment completed. These will be shared in private with parents through private messaging on the Outschool platform. To practice at home, students will be provided with a pdf loaded to the classroom showing them how to login for convenience. Students will need to upload videos or images of themselves showing they know how to properly place their hands and these need to be posted to the classroom before our next meeting. Week 2: For our next class, we will take what we have learned so far a step further by watching a video created by the teacher showing students how to type punctuation using shift and another key, use enter and use a space bar without looking down and all of the reasons why hen pecking is not allowed. This will be a jam packed class! Students will have a second homework assignment to complete in their list of lessons online. Students will post a comment to the classroom for homework to interact with their classmates and create discussion all while practicing typing. Week 3: In our third class we will begin to master the art of typing letters without looking. When we seem to have a grasp on where those letters are located without having to look down, we will move on to building up our typing skills into typing words, sentences and adding on numbers. To practice what we have learned, students will create a video for their homework assignment to upload to the classroom. Cheering on our peers for the progress they are making and effort they put into their learning will be encouraged. Week 4: Our fourth class will be focused on practicing our typing skills while having fun with typing games. Students will be able to keep their hands on the home row keys while using their fingers to reach for the home keys, punctuation, shift, space bar, enter and their numbers. No touch pads or keypads needed here! Students are encouraged to practice this outside of the classroom. Homework will be a post to the classroom to create a discussion with classmates. Week 5: Our fifth class will be a review and practice of the things we have learned. Students will be posting to the classroom a quiz and are allowed to help each other out with this quiz through commenting. Week 6: The sixth class will be a fun class to end our time together where we will complete our post assessment and end class by playing a typing game to test how well we can type now. We will share what we have learned in this class as a final post before signing off. Parents will receive a private message with the student's scores from their pre and post assessments to show the improvements we have made and a recommendation of what to work on to continue learning as well as improving. Each evening students will be asked to complete different assignments with the website link provided. This extra practice outside of class will give them the chance to improve their typing skills to prepare for our final day of challenges. This is going to be a fun and extremely helpful class that will make your future easier. I cannot wait to help you get started with keyboarding for beginners! Teacher Lauren

Hello!
I am Lauren Cannon and I love getting to teach students from all over the world!
Living very close to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park in the small town of Sylva has brought me so much joy and inspires me to spend as much time as possible outdoors. I enjoy hiking, seeing wildlife like a black bear, skunks, raccoons, lizards, skinks, opossums, snakes of every kind (eek!), insects of all kinds, and a bobcat on a regular basis at my house! I sometimes see them, or remnants of their time at our house in our garden or my cats bring them to our front door. Ha! We also enjoy spending time as a family swimming and gem mining in the rivers and lakes, traveling, or fishing and going for family rides off road from time to time.
While teaching and tutoring on my own or with Outschool, I am always finding some way to make learning fun by creating fun printables, virtual field trips, games and finding some way to make learning an experience to remember for everyone.
As a former Elementary School Teacher, I have always strongly believed in everyone getting to have a voice. Just like with genealogy, I love getting to hear everyone's story! Each child deserves to have a voice and to be heard. I do my best to make sure each student is heard in the classroom within reason or without taking away from our classmates class time.
I truly enjoy getting to help students have fun, but I also love getting to see their faces light up when they feel good about their learning. Seeing students learn and make progress in their learning blesses me beyond measure.
If you feel you have not had a good experience during a class we had together, please reach out to me in messages and let me know. I am looking for ways to improve and your input helps me be my best for my students.
Thank you for taking the time to get to know me.
I cannot wait to see you in the classroom!
Lauren Cannon
