18 in-class hoursHomework
I may assign very simple homework assignments throughout the course where I see there are areas of improvement. Assignments will be tasks that take no longer than a few minutes. (e.g. count to 5 in Japanese twice a day this week, practice 10 jumping jacks 3 days this week, pick one day this week and see how many punches you can do in 30 seconds, etc.) When I assign homework I will announce it at the end of class AND post it in the classroom.Assessment
Learners will be assessed every 4 weeks with stripe tests and one final belt test at the end of the course.Class Experience
Welcome to the yellow belt class! I’m so excited to continue working with your children and watch them grow. Here’s what you can expect from me and the class: Each belt cycle is roughly three months. For this cycle, your karate student will start at yellow belt and work to earn their orange belt. We will learn Japanese terminology, punches, kicks, blocks, footwork, and stances. We will also learn the first kata (form) in our style of karate (Shorin Ryu). A kata is a sequence of predetermined movements, this is the "long traditional combo" I've been referencing in the white belt class. Every four weeks I will introduce a new concept that will be our theme: goal setting, self discipline, and confidence. It’s very important to me to instill more than just kicks and punches, but life skills that they can carry with them outside of class. I keep classes small to ensure everyone has a personalized experience. We will do monthly check-ins to make sure everyone is on track to reach their belt goals. When they meet the requirements of each check-in they will earn a stripe on their belt. If I notice anyone is struggling and needs extra practice, I will reach out to you and let you know. They are more than welcome to join any of my group classes or schedule a private lesson with me. No ninjas left behind! In the last week of this class, your martial artist will be ready to test for their orange belt. The test will be on the last Tuesday and the graduation will be on the last Thursday of this class. During the graduation, we will have a final performance for all the grown ups to demonstrate what we've learned and I will need your help to present them their orange belts! Week 1: new vocab, floor side kicks, footwork, jodan, chudan, and gedan punches Week 2: more vocab, start kata Week 3: side stance, defensive side kicks, finish kata part 1 Week 4: stripe test #1 Week 5: new vocab, slide up side kicks, review Week 6: finish kata and review Week 7: review Week 8: stripe test #2 Week 9: center blocks Week 10: review, learners teach combos Week 11: review, learners teach combos Week 12: yellow belt test (stripe test #3) and GRADUATION!!!

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hi everyone! I'm Sensei Jess. I was a shy, scared, anti-social little kid. My confidence and self-esteem were virtually non-existent. When I started middle school I met my first bully. She would pick on me in the locker room and in the halls almost every day. I was too scared to stick up for myself so the tormenting went on for months.
It all changed when I started karate. I had finally found something I liked and felt I was good at. I found my voice and started coming out of my shell. After a few months of training I was able to stand up to my bully and she never messed with me again. My whole mindset changed. Instead of wanting to hide behind others I wanted to lead them. Instead of wanting to sit and watch TV all day I wanted to exercise and get stronger. Instead of shying away from difficult things I was excited for challenges and was confident I could overcome them.
I have been training in martial arts for over 12 years and have earned my 3rd degree black belt. I have a background in traditional Okinawan karate as well as modern sport martial arts (all those cool jumping, spinning, "ninja" moves you may have seen on TV). I started training when I was 12 and quickly fell in love with the art. I was inspired by my instructors and almost immediately knew that I wanted to give back to the martial arts community and become an instructor myself one day. I saw such a huge and positive change in myself in such a short amount of time and it became my mission to share this art with others.
I’ve seen so many of my students come into the dojo scared, shy, lacking confidence, and become strong young leaders in a matter of minutes! That’s the power of martial arts. Karate teaches people many important life skills. Here are a few that I value most:
Confidence
Respect (for others and oneself)
Goal setting
Perseverance
Control (of both mind and body)
Self-discipline
Effort
Empathy
I like to teach these values through fun, high-energy drills and games. I always talk about how we can use these skills to become better martial artists, but also better children, students, siblings, friends, and people.
If you have any questions please do not hesitate to reach out! I look forward to meeting you and starting your martial arts journey soon!
