Foreign Language: I studied at a Japanese immersion school in Tokyo for 2 years. I also have a degree in Education from the University of Alberta, specializing in second language education.
There will be homework in this class:
-Memorization: Students will be expected to memorize Japanese letters, as well as vocabulary. I will provide them with online flashcards to do this. Every student should spend around 15-20minutes a day on flashcards.
- Written homework: students will be expected to complete and hand in written homework between each class. You can expect about 1 hour of homework per class. Students will be given feedback on all of their work in a timely manner.
Homework materials and lesson slides will be provided. Students should have a dedicated notebook for Japanese. They may also want to buy index cards, to make flashcards if they prefer physical cards. Quizlet is an external website that I would like students to access between classes. I will send students pre-made flash cards on this website. Students can use this website to help memorize new vocabulary. Students will need to make an account to use it. It is a free resource.
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
I will be constantly assessing performance of students in their speaking and writing. I will use what I observe to guide my teaching. If students are having trouble communicating a certain topic, it means I have not taught it well enough, and we need to review.

I do have final tests available for those students who do need a Letter Grade for their schooling.
1 hour 50 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 2 - 4 hours per week outside of class.
Quizlet is an external website that I would like students to access between classes. I will send students pre-made flash cards on this website. Students can use this website to help memorize new vocabulary. Students will need to make an account to use it. It is a free resource.

If students make their own flashcards instead, they do not need to access Quizlet.
I will be using some materials from the Genki series Japanese textbooks, students will not need to have their own copy.
