Class Experience

What You Should Expect
At the end of this course, students will know how to capture their gameplay and get it into their editing software. They WILL NOT know everything there is to know about getting a polished video up on YouTube. This course will set the foundation for that to happen as they progress.

Teaching Material and Style
For this type of class, we will be very interactive. I will be doing a mix of asking questions and providing answers to make sure that students are equipped to make videos that they want to make after class. I'll show my screen frequently so that students can see what I am doing and keep it as simple and "intro" level as possible so that everyone can follow along.

What I Expect
Students who sign up for this class are enthusiastic about video games to some degree. An ability to think critically and use some advanced user interfaces (in the video editing software of their choice) is also recommended. I have years of experience editing video, specifically in DaVinci Resolve, Final Cut Pro X, and Adobe Premiere Pro. There are many other software options out there, but those are the ones that I can troubleshoot or give instruction on very specifically.

Learning Goals

At the end of this class, students should be aware of how to capture the footage of their gameplay and import that captured footage into their video editor of choice.

Other Details

Parental Guidance
The majority of students want to make montages of themselves playing games like Fortnite or Destiny. These are shooter games which, by their very nature, do depict shooting, guns, grenades, explosions, and shooting at other people in-game. I will not be showing any footage from any game rated higher than T for Teen (I mostly play Destiny 2), but I cannot fully control what kinds of other games or content other students are allowed to play or what they discuss.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Bachelor's Degree from Grace College
I have been a professional video editor for the last 19 years and a gamer for the last 25 years. Teaching my boys about video games and some of the basics of video production is one of the most fun things that I get to do. My goal is to keep things relaxed and make sure that students can learn without losing sight of the fun of gaming and video creation.
