Fostering independence is an important skill as children grow older. This includes teaching teens to embrace their creativity and make things for themselves. Utilizing these skills in the kitchen can spur a love of baking or simply be an outlet to comfort and grow. In this Flex Class, students will have weekly assignments to complete at their own pace. Week 1Lesson 1What's What and Kitchen SafetyIn week 1 we will be discussing what's what in the kitchen, as well as kitchen safety.Week 2Lesson 2Cookies GaloreIn our first week in the kitchen, learners will begin with a fan favorite of Chocolate Chip Cookies while learning how to read a recipe card.Week 3Lesson 3Getting CreativeCreativity in the kitchen is the best part of baking! This week, learners will make Sugar Cookies using different add ins and toppings.Week 4Lesson 4Monster CookiesKeeping our creative juices flowing, learners will make Monster Cookies, otherwise known as Everything But The Kitchen Sink Cookies. They will need to choose at least 3 items to add into our chocolate chip cookie base, with one little twist.Week 5Lesson 5Cake Time!Time to move onto something a little more advanced. Learners will be practicing multistep cakes this week as we make both the cake and frosting from scratch, beginning with a traditional Chocolate Cake with Chocolate Ganache Glaze.Week 6Lesson 6Spices in BakingThis week, learners will learn that spices aren't just for cooking as we make a delicious Spice Cake with Buttercream Frosting.Week 7Lesson 7Fill Em Up!Filled cakes and cupcakes can be a delicious surprise burst of flavor. This week we will be making Strawberry Cupcakes filled with a homemade Strawberry Frosting. Learners will also be making a yummy Strawberry Coulis.Week 8Lesson 8Copycats TreatsRecreating treats is a fun experiment in the kitchen. Learners will be creating a copy cat of a store bought Cosmic Brownie.Week 9Lesson 9BlondiesA delicious brown sugar treat will be this week's star as we create the delicious Blondie!Week 10Lesson 10Lemon ChilledIn another multiple step process, learners will create Lemon Bars as we alternate between heat and cooling to get the perfect texture.Week 11Lesson 11Time for Bread!This week will begin our lesson in breads. Learners will work with temperature and time to create a series of delicious breads, beginning with Banana Bread.Week 12Lesson 12Oatmeal BreadThis week, learners will create aesthetic bread while we learn about scoring and topping breads as we make Oatmeal Bread.Week 13Lesson 13Pumpkin BreadIn our final lesson, learners will put together different skills as we use spices, scoring, kneading and toppings to make a beautiful and delicious Pumpkin Bread.
