Description
Class Experience
In this 55-minute, beginner-oriented course, students will learn to read tab through playing the iconic riffs of Deep Purple's Smoke on the Water, Cream's Sunshine of Your Lover, Pink Floyd's Wish You Were Here and Michael Jackson's Beat It. The focus of the class will be on playing the specific pitches within the songs and rhythms will be learned by rote rather than notation. No prior knowledge of the instrument will be required. By the end of the course students learn to tune the guitar,...
Students will be able to read and reproduce simple melodies through tablature, using their ear to intuit the rhythm of simple pieces, and will learn to search for tabs for their own personal exploration. They will also leave with a repertoire of several iconic and recognizable riffs to practice and experience tuning the guitar.
Learners will be expected to learn a mnemonic device in order to memorize the string names. Learners will also be expected to develop a practice routine, and are encouraged to share their progress on the riffs. Finally, learners will be expected to find a tab online for a song they are interested in and share it with the class.
4 files available upon enrollment1. A guitar with all 6 strings (acoustic or electric will do). 2. A guitar tuner (I recommend a Snark clip on tuner, available from $15 to $20 USD) or an app that will work as one (I recommend GuitarTuna - it's free) 3. A few guitar picks. 4. A way to view the music and materials I will send out before class. 5. A good seat without arm rests, ideally one in which the learner can sit upright with their feet touching the ground. Optional, but nice: 1. A good, sturdy music stand. One with a solid back is best. These often cost $25 USD or more. 2. Print-outs of the music and materials I will send, as well as a folder or binder to keep them in.
55 minutes per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
