Description
Class Experience
In this 55-minute, beginner-oriented course, students will learn to play a simplified version of the song Bellyache, by Billie Eilish. No prior knowledge of the instrument will be required. By the end of the course students learn to tune the guitar, play 3 different open guitar chords, read chord charts, strum the guitar and begin to understand rhythms composted of whole, half and quarter notes using a numerical counting system. We will also touch on general music ideas, building a...
Students will be able to reproduce the C, A minor and E minor open guitar chords, read and reproduce a rhythm consisting of quarter notes and half notes, read chord charts, name all 6 strings, and tune their instrument.
Learners will be expected to create their own mnemonic device (as an acrostic poem) to memorize the string names. Learners will also be expected to develop a practice routine, and are encouraged to share their progress on the song.
3 files available upon enrollment1. A guitar with all 6 strings (acoustic or electric will do). 2. A guitar tuner (I recommend a Snark clip on tuner, available from $15 to $20 USD) or an app that will work as one (I recommend GuitarTuna - it's free) 3. A few guitar picks. 4. A way to view the music and materials I will send out before class. 5. A good seat without arm rests, ideally one in which the learner can sit upright with their feet touching the ground. Optional, but nice: 1. A good, sturdy music stand. One with a solid back is best. These often cost $25 USD or more. 2. Print-outs of the music and materials I will send, as well as a folder or binder to keep them in.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
55 minutes per week in class, and no time outside of class.
Though this song is not explicit and we will be focused exclusively on the guitar rather than the lyrics, parents should note that the song makes allusions to adult themes. I would encourage you to find the lyrics online and decide whether or not
