Beginner Genealogy
Students get to bring their family history alive through research, note taking, organization and careful mapping. We get to give our family members of the past a voice by gathering their information and learning all about them through time.
What's included
12 live meetings
5 in-class hoursProjects
1 hour per week. Students will be encouraged to conduct research as we discuss how to find resources and ancestors each week to practice what was learned that week in class. This is not a requirement of course. Due to research limitations based on locations, guardians available to make it possible, some members may not be easily found due to records burned, etc. projects and evaluations are not going to be provided other than informally in class during discussions.Grading
No grading is involved in this course, but if needed, please notify the teacher ahead of time! Students may be limited in the ability to conduct research beyond online or without guardian support in some capacity and will limit the grading options for this class. Many will find their family member almost impossible to find due to burned records or lack of ability to travel to locations their ancestors once lived to research, but we will do our best to find ways to search for them. Grading is not going to be provided in this class for those reasons.Class Experience

Beginner Level
We will begin our classes with a chance to share and get to know one another through a question of the day. This will be followed with learning how to create an ancestry.com account, how to develop your tree, steps to take to analyze hints and input information without taking too many risks. We will also learn how to search for records and so much more by using the ancestry.com site. If you are interested in learning more about how to find records on your own, please see the suggested classes below. Students will not need an ancestry.com account to complete this class. The teacher will share her account on the screen with students as needed. If students are interested in purchasing an account or setting up a free account, they may do so at their parents discretion. Other Details
Learning Needs
Please notify me ahead of time with tips, ideas and to collaborate on what I can do to provide the best experience for your learner!
Parental Guidance
Parents are not required to be present, but they are always welcomed. Some stories in the family history we discover on our own can be difficult to process or perhaps jarring, so it is advised as students conduct research outside of the classroom they are given proper guidance and supervision! The next level class will include researching together, but this course is strictly learning how to research.
Pre-Requisites
No prerequisites. Just an interest in learning about your family history!
Supply List
Students should bring paper and pencil to each class or note taking tools they feel the most comfortable with to record what they feel is important to take with them after each class.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Sources
Occasionally I will be using the ancestry.com site and other resources from my own family research (all school appropriate of course) to introduce and share sample materials for teaching how to find resources, assess them and organize them. Students will not be given access to these items individually. This will be something they can discover on their own or we can work together in a one on one course setting to develop their skills further. During this class, all materials are provided by the teacher except the materials needed to take notes if students feel the need to do so.
Teacher expertise and credentials
Bachelor's Degree in Education from Western Carolina University
With many years of experience utilizing ancestry.com for my own personal and professional genealogy projects, I have an exorbitant amount of knowledge to share with students that I cannot wait to provide them! I’ve created many family trees for friends, coworkers from around the world, acquaintances who have reached out to me to acquire help in searching for their biological family and comparing DNA results. While I have much to learn in the world of DNA, I look forward to helping students begin their genealogy journey through using what I have found the most effective, useful and exciting path to take in conducting genealogy research.
